ARNOLD COMES THROUGH; RECORD-SETTING RECEIVER LEADS CSUN TO WIN.Byline: Chris Branam Staff Writer Facing third-down and possible oblivion, the Cal State Northridge football coaches decided to put the ball in Aaron Arnold's hands. Arnold did the rest. Taking a reverse 39 yards for the first rushing touchdown of his career, Arnold punctuated CSUN's 41-27 victory over Idaho State Saturday afternoon at North Campus Stadium. The Matadors (2-2, 1-1) broke a two-game losing streak and improve to 4-0 in Big Sky Conference openers at home. The Bengals dropped to 2-3, 0-3. The last of Arnold's career-high four touchdowns was the most important. The Matadors had an uneasy 34-27 lead and needed a first down with a little under two minutes left. ``However I can get the ball, so be it,'' said Arnold, a senior and the school's career leader in receptions, receiving yards and receiving touchdowns. ``I definitely want to be one of the `go-to' guys in the clutch. I think I've earned that after four years.'' CSUN CSUN California State University Northridge used a play it practiced during the week, and a play Arnold confessed he doubted would work in the game. And the right player. After a slow start, Arnold scored on touchdown passes from 35, 2 and 7 yards. He had eight catches - right at his season per game average - for 76 yards. ``Aaron Arnold does what Aaron Arnold does,'' CSUN interim head coach Jeff Kearin said. ``He's a big-play player. It always comes back to, `Let's get the ball to Aaron Arnold.' The Matadors, last in the Big Sky in almost every defensive category, held the Bengals to 88 yards rushing. ``Everybody's attitude was better,'' said middle linebacker Cos Abercrombie, who had a team-high 10 tackles. ``The coaches put in a new defense this week and people really had faith in that defense.'' Faith is a word not associated with the Matadors' ability to stop the opponent this season. They've given up 1,200 yards in their last two games, both losses. But Northridge had six sacks Saturday, one better than their season total. ``The coaches told us we were pretty low in total defense nationally,'' linebacker Brennen Swanson said. ``I've never been on any team that is last in total defense. Our whole defense stepped it up.'' Swanson included. But CSUN still didn't gain control of the game until the fourth quarter. The Matadors repeatedly made mistakes, specifically penalties, that killed big plays. In the first quarter, Arnold had a big gain on a reverse, the same play he ran late, wiped out by a holding penalty.
