This is what you should know about the ability and staying power of Mark Buchoz.

At age 83, he's just finished compiling his first job resume.

``I never needed one before, but I need one now, '' said the Lake View Terrace man who once trained for the Army horse cavalry cavalry, a military force consisting of mounted troops trained to fight from horseback. Horseback riding probably evolved independently in the Eurasian steppes and the mountains above the Mesopotamian plain. By 1400 B.C.  after enlisting in 1943.

Yeah, the horse cavalry. During World War II, the Army had plans to use cavalry units in northern China where there were vast areas with few roads.

It never happened, so Mark went to Officers Candidate School instead, serving out his time as a lieutenant in the occupation of Japan.

It's all there on that resume he'll be passing around when he hits the bricks Monday morning.

groups, to see if any of them want to hire an 83-year-old guy with cavalry training and 50 years' work experience.

``I suspect I'll get some long looks,'' Mark said, ``but it is against the law to discriminate against someone because of age, isn't it?''

Yes, it is, but, hey - how do you know for sure why people say no?

Mark was laid off a few months ago from United Way's San Fernando Valley office, where he had worked a temporary job that lasted 22 years.

Before that, he worked in the community resources department at Hughes Aircraft Hughes Aircraft Company was a major aerospace and defense company founded by Howard Hughes. The group was based near Ballona Creek, in Culver City, California, USA, on the Pacific Coast.

Hughes Aircraft was acquired by General Motors in 1985.

Two jobs - 50 years. Who needed a resume?

United Way didn't want to let Mark go, said Frank Chimarusti, regional vice president for the agency's Valley office, but money just dried up for the program he was in.

``He was doing a wonderful job and it's been a sad event for all of us who have known and worked with Mark over the years,'' Chimarusti said.

Greg Buesing said the same thing. He had been Mark's boss before Frank, until he left United Way three years ago to become director of planned-giving at California State University, Northridge CSUN offers a variety of programs leading to bachelor's degrees in 61 fields and master's degrees in 42 fields. The university has over 150,000 alumni. It's also home to a summer musical theater/theater program known as TADW (TeenAge Drama Workshop) that leads teenagers through an .

``Over the years, Mark has been responsible for raising millions of dollars for United Way,'' Greg said. ``He's a very talented guy.''

So, what happened? How does a talented guy who has raised millions get the ax?

In a tight economy like this one, corporations and businesses stopped giving financial support to the Sponsored Loaned Executive program that employed Mark for 22 years.

Hughes Aircraft loaned them Mark, who was about to retire.

``Over time, instead of releasing an employee to us for the campaign, the corporations began putting up money so we could keep retired employees like Mark all year,'' Buesing said.

It wasn't much, Chimarusti added. ``There were no bennies, no vacation or sick leave - just a small paycheck,'' he said.

Mark worked 40 hours a week, meeting with employers to organize United Way fund-raisers within the companies.

``He was out on the campaign trail for us, and good at it,'' Chimarusti said.

Raising millions and getting paid pennies.

``When I got cut I was surprised, but I can understand it,'' Mark said Wednesday. He still carries a warm place in his heart for United Way and his friends there trying to find him another job.
