ARMED AND DANGEROUS.

Churchill Churchill.

has proved to be the Midwestern League's dominant softball softball, variant of baseball played with a larger ball on a smaller field. Invented (1888) in Chicago as an indoor game, it was at various times called indoor baseball, mush ball, playground ball, kitten ball, and, because it was also played by women, ladies'  team during the past two seasons.

The two-time league champions have also proved they can play with the state's top teams, but they've come up just short in the playoffs against an eventual state finalist during each of the last two years.

In 2003, Southridge defeated Churchill 8-6 in the first round and went on to lose in the OSAA OSAA Oregon School Activities Association

Last year, Westview edged past the Lancers lanc·er

1-0 in the quarterfinals and went on to win the state championship.

The Lancers have five starters back and once again are the league favorite in The Register-Guard poll of coaches.

"There are obviously high expectations," Churchill coach Eric Leyba said. "At the end of the year, we want to continue to get better. We definitely need to keep hitting the ball and we need to do a better job defensively. Last year, that was one of the things that hurt us against Westview - defensive let-ups. You can't do that against teams with great speed."

The Lancers have won 32 straight league games with power hitters such as Jessica Steigleman, Krystal Dyer and Jodi Parmer, who have all graduated. Rachel Steigleman, Kelly Dyer and Lily lily, common name for the Liliaceae, a plant family numbering several thousand species of as many as 300 genera, widely distributed over the earth and particularly abundant in warm temperate and tropical regions.  Rogers are among the Lancers who have picked up the power once again this season.

"We are showing some promise with how we are swinging the bats," Leyba said. "We've got a lot of pop with this year's squad. I thought by losing Krystal and Jessica that we would have lost some pop - and it does hurt not having those two - but the kids we have returning can definitely drive the ball."

Mindy Bean has moved to the top of the order and is providing the Lancers with just what they need.

"One of the good things about Mindy is that she hits with power and has great wheels," Leyba said. "She is one of the quickest players on the team."

Bean is followed in the lineup A criminal investigation technique in which the police arrange a number of individuals in a row before a witness to a crime and ask the witness to identify which, if any, of the individuals committed the crime.  by Steigleman, Dyer and Rogers, who were all first-team all-league selections last season.

"Rachel is hitting second and has the potential to hit the long ball and has been making good contact," Leyba said. "When Rachel and Mindy get on base, we have somebody like Kelly to drive them in, and then there is Lily in the four spot who can also drive in runs. It's one of those things where the kids have spent a lot of time hitting and hopefully sooner or later it will start to pay off."

The Lancers aren't likely to need much offense with Dyer on the mound mound, prehistoric earthwork erected over a burial place as a memorial or landmark, a defensive embankment, or a site for ceremonial or religious rites. Such structures are found in many parts of the world, but the name is applied in particular to those of North . "She's got a little bit more movement on her ball and she is throwing a little harder," Leyba said. "It's a nice thing to have because as you know, pitching is everything in this sport. Any time Kelly is on the hill, she's going to give us a chance to win."

The Lancers also have an influx of newcomers with freshmen Katie Steigleman and Sierra Lessel joining Boothe in the outfield, and freshman Megan Peterson in the infield Infield is a widely used term in sports terminology, its meaning depends on in what sport it is used. In baseball

"It's a nice balance to have with some upperclassmen and a good group of freshmen like we have," Leyba said. "This is probably one of the best freshmen groups we've had since I've been at Churchill."

North Eugene is once again considered the top contender to the Lancers. The Highlanders return five seniors who earned all-league recognition last season.

Ashley Likens joined Dyer as a first-team all-league pitcher and Denee Johnson was a first-team selection at first base. Jacque Barton BARTON, old English law. The demesne land of a manor; a farm distinct from the mansion.  was a second-team shortstop but has moved to catcher, and Ashley Ficek takes over at shortstop after earning second-team honors at second base last year.

Annee McHarry is back in the outfield after earning honorable-mention all-league honors last season.

"We've got our five seniors starting off the lineup, so I think they will hit really well," North Eugene coach Mike Jodoin said. "We've been struggling a bit at the plate early, in that we are not scoring runs because we are leaving runners in scoring position In the sport of baseball, a baserunner is said to be in scoring position when he is on second or third base. The distinction between being on first base and second or third base is that a runner on first can usually only score if the batter hits an extra base hit, while a runner on , but I think we are coming around."

Springfield and Thurston also made the playoffs last season, and both schools return a handful of starters this season. Marshfield is on the rise with strong freshman and sophomore classes.

Willamette, Lebanon, South Eugene, and Sheldon all have new coaches.
