ARMCHAIR FANS IN FOR A REAL TREAT.

Byline: ORLA BANNON

THE Ulster Council have struck a new deal which will see all games featuring Ulster teams in the All-Ireland series shown live on free-to-air TV.

After months of talks with the BBC BBC
 in full British Broadcasting Corp.

, agreement was reached last Friday and the details were revealed at yesterday's Ulster Championship launch.

It was agreed some months ago that RTE (1) See runtime engine.

would show seven games from the Ulster Championship live while BBC will screen all eight, although coverage of the first round tie between Donegal and Antrim will be deferred. Setanta will also show seven games.

However, a solution has now been found regarding the coverage of Ulster teams at the All-Ireland quarter-final, semi-final and final stage.

with no access to RTE could not watch these games but now they will be shown live on BBC.

"I am very relieved," admitted Ulster Council chief-executive Danny Murphy. "A lot of hard work has gone in since last October, a lot of work has been taken forward by Pauric Duffy and Tom Daly Tom Daly can refer to:
  • Tom Daly (politician) (born 1955) — Orange County Clerk-Recorder and former Mayor of Anaheim, California
  • Tom Daly (baseball catcher) (1891–1946) — former Major League Baseball catcher for the Chicago White Sox (1913–1915),
 getting this sorted.

"We have emerged with what I think is a reasonable package. TV coverage of our championship is quite substantial but it is the post-Ulster Championship coverage that has come to a solution.

"The BBC will carry their pictures on terrestrial digital and on analogue. It means that all the rights (Setanta have the international rights) are fully respected, but it took us up until last Friday to get a full agreement and this will now apply for the 2009 and 2010 Championship.

"The qualifier games are covered in a separate package so we can't get involved in them."

Ulster teams have featured heavily in the latter stages of the Championship and Murphy said that was an extra factor in resolving the impasse.

"Having strong games and having potential teams going through to the latter stages of the All-Ireland are important factors," he conceded.

"I do think that it was a solution that everyone needed and that included the TV companies themselves, Croke Park Croke Park (Irish: Páirc an Chrócaigh) in Dublin, Ireland is the largest sports stadium in Ireland and the principal stadium and headquarters of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA), Ireland's biggest sporting organisation.  and the Ulster Council.
