Cairo International Airport has joined the front rank of world airports with the recent opening of its massive new passenger facility, Terminal 3. Designed to handle a maximum of 14 million passengers a year, Cairo Terminal 3 is the new home of 27 international and domestic airlines carrying 11,000 passengers each day on some 200 scheduled flights.

The smooth operational debut of Terminal 3 starting in May was evidence of the careful planning and coordination of the Cairo Airport Company (CAC See Consumer Advisory Council. ), the airlines at Terminal 3, and the airport's systems supplier--ARINC Incorporated.

Cairo Terminal 3 represents the leading edge of Airport IT systems design. It is equipped with the most advanced suite of airport and airline passenger technologies ever deployed, 14 state-of-the-art systems from ARINC ARINC Aeronautical Radio, Inc.

In a breakthrough, ARINC has installed the world's first context-aware operational platform at Terminal 3, to control all employee access to critical ramp control and management applications. Employees are linked only to those IT applications they actually require, according to according to

ARINC has provided Terminal 3 with Egypt's first custom Biometric Immigration immigration, entrance of a person (an alien) into a new country for the purpose of establishing permanent residence. Motives for immigration, like those for migration generally, are often economic, although religious or political factors may be very important.  Gate (BIG) system, to streamline border control processing and reduce long security queues. When qualified passengers use the automated biometric gates, Cairo Airport police can focus more attention on the manual screening of sensitive passengers, a major benefit to frequent travelers and a competitive advantage for airlines.

Terminal 3 is equipped with the first self-service CUSS passenger kiosks in the Middle East, an ARINC SelfServTM kiosk system.

All the ARINC IT systems at Terminal 3 were installed by, and are being maintained by ARINC, using local resources that have undergone comprehensive training.

"ARINC is proud to have partnered with CAC's planners, architects, and prime contractors since we were awarded this responsibility in 2006," stated Paul Hickox, Director of Middle East Airport Systems, ARINC EMEA (Europe, Middle East, Africa) Refers to that region of the world. For example, one might see products packaged differently for the UK, EMEA and Asia Pacific markets. . "We have taken this opportunity to deliver a suite of airport operational systems precisely matched to the vision of our customer, that are unmatched anywhere else in the world. We greatly appreciate the cooperation we have received on every level, which ultimately made this accomplishment possible."

The Cairo Airport Company carefully orchestrated a 7-month ramp-up of activities to ensure the successful opening of Terminal 3. ARINC cooperated fully throughout this period, providing working systems in December 2008 for a nationally televised Terminal 3 Inauguration Ceremony, attended by Egypt's President Hosni Mubarak Noun 1. . The ARINC check-in and SelfServ kiosks were made fully functional for that event and were demonstrated by Mrs. Mubarak.ARINC subsequently supported all successive phases of the launch, starting with a test period leading to the April 27 first flight--an Egyptair flight from Cairo to JFK. The airport then ran for two weeks at a reduced capacity of just five flights per day, and some 111,000 passengers flew through the terminal during the first month of operations.

At the end of May, international flights were cut over to Terminal 3, eventually adding some 200 flights daily. In June, all remaining Star Alliance international and domestic flights were cut over, and the gradual phase-in was completed successfully.

In addition to supplying its specially-developed IT systems for Terminal 3, ARINC has deployed ten of its industry-standard operational technologies at the new terminal. These include the iMUSETM common-use passenger check-in and departure system; the IP-enabled AirVUETM flight information display system (FIDS FIDS Flight Information Display System

Terminal 3 also uses the ARINC AirPlanTM Resource Management System, Information Broker (IB) system, and ARINC Information Kiosks.
