ARIANESPACE CHOSEN TO LAUNCH INDONESIA'S PALAPA C1 SATELLITE

 WASHINGTON, Aug. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- The launch contract for Indonesia's PALAPA C1 satellite has been signed by Iwa Sewaka, chairman of PT. Satelit Palapa Indonesia (SATELINDO); Adi R. Adiwoso, chairman of PT. Pasifik Satelit Nusantara (BSN) of Indonesia; and Charles Bigot, chairman and CEO of Arianespace.
 PALAPA C1 will be launched in mid-1995 by an ARIANE launch vehicle from the Kourou Space Center in French Guiana. It will be built by Hughes Aircraft of the United States. Weighing 2,989 kilograms at launch, PALAPA C1 will offer 30 C-band channels and 4 Ku-band channels, to provide both telephone and television transmission services. Design life in geostationary orbit is 14 years.
 Bigot emphasized the importance of signing a contract with a new client: "We are very pleased to have earned the confidence of Indonesia, one of today's most experienced satellite operators. With this signature, Arianespace's order book now includes all major satellite operators in the world. We are proud that Europe is able to play an important role in participating in the development of telecommunications, not only in Indonesia, but also throughout the Asia- Pacific region."
 With this contract, its 13th of the year, Arianespace's backlog now stands at 40 satellites to be launched, worth approximately 18.1 billion French francs (US$3.1 billion).
