Dozens of opponents of the plan packed the Santa Clarita Planning Commission Noun 1. planning commission - a commission delegated to propose plans for future activities and developments

``It makes a huge statement that so many of you are here, especially since the Olympics are on,'' said the commission chairman, Dennis Ostrom.

Opponents of the plan had to be quieted by Ostrom several times throughout the meeting. Many snickered at claims that the project would not create traffic problems in the neighborhood.

``We're going to fight this,'' said Betty Morrison, who lives across from the proposed arena on Placeritos Boulevard near Quigley Canyon Road.

The commissioners did not take a vote and will resume discussion of the issue Nov. 7. They directed the city staff to give them more information on the community's septic septic /sep·tic/ (sep´tik) pertaining to sepsis.

The commission appeared receptive to one of the requests from opponents. Several critics, including Valerie Thomas, president of the Newhall County Water District and a Placerita Canyon resident, want the college to create a master plan for the entire campus before constructing any more buildings.

If approved, the arena will be used only for school functions and could not be rented out for concerts or other events without the city officials' approval, said city planner Jason Smisko.

That would limit the number of visitors to the arena and reduce the number needing to park cars near the building, Smisko said.
