Arizona receiver Randy Gatewood was standing all by himself in the corner of the end zone with 38 seconds left in Saturday's game against the Avengers at Staples Center This articlearticle or section has multiple issues:

, giving him an easy 5-yard touchdown catch.

That happened several times, but the Avengers always had an answer for their uncharacteristically porous defense. With four seconds left, Avengers quarterback John Kaleo John Kaleo (born February 5, 1971) is a former Arena Football League quarterback for the Albany Firebirds (1993), Cleveland Thunderbolts (1994), St. Louis Stampede (1995–96), Anaheim Piranhas (1997), San Jose SaberCats (1997), New England Sea Wolves (1999), Tampa Bay Storm  stepped up in the pocket and found an open Kevin Ingram Kevin Ingram (born June 19, 1977) is an Arena Football League wide receiver/defensive back for the Los Angeles Avengers. The clock ran out on Arizona during the ensuing kickoff return.

If the season ended today, the Avengers would be in the playoffs, but three games remain. The Avengers (8-5) are tied with San Jose San Jose, city, United States

The Avengers had an 18-point lead midway through the third quarter, and, not surprisingly, it was not safe. Arizona scored 16 unanswered points to pull within two points at 38-36.

Arizona eventually took a 49-45 lead on a 2-yard run by Siaha Burley with 6:54 left. The Avengers answered on the next possession on a superb catch by receiver Tony Locke, who used an outstretched out·stretch

Former Cal State Northridge quarterback Sherdrick Bonner threw six touchdown passes for the Rattlers (4-9), who had won three of their previous four games on the heels of a seven-game losing streak. The Avengers made things too easy for Arizona; Bonner's receivers were wide open on several scores.

Bonner, 36, had missed three games with a knee injury and returned last week, but he still looked rusty. Arizona trailed 24-20 at halftime despite three first-half turnovers, two of which the Avengers cashed in for scores.

The Avengers scored twice early in the third quarter and took a 38-20 lead midway through the third quarter after Bonner was sacked by Silas Demary deep in Rattlers territory. All of Bonner's first-half touchdowns went to his favorite target, Burley bur·ley

The Avengers scored on the next play, Greg Hopkins running it in for a 7-0 lead. The Avengers were opportunistic, also scoring off a turnover in the second quarter.

Locke, the Avengers' surprise this season, had an impressive night with four touchdown receptions.

Avengers kicker Remy Hamilton tried a 56-yard field goal but it was about 10 yards short.
