The Avengers' defensive backs were burned several times, but the defense also set up two scores. And the offense came through at the end.

With four seconds left, Avengers quarterback John Kaleo John Kaleo (born February 5, 1971) is a former Arena Football League quarterback for the Albany Firebirds (1993), Cleveland Thunderbolts (1994), St. Louis Stampede (1995–96), Anaheim Piranhas (1997), San Jose SaberCats (1997), New England Sea Wolves (1999), Tampa Bay Storm  stepped up in the pocket and found an open Kevin Ingram Kevin Ingram (born June 19, 1977) is an Arena Football League wide receiver/defensive back for the Los Angeles Avengers. Arizona didn't make it to midfield on the ensuing kickoff return, and the clock ran out.

If the season ended today, the Avengers would be in the playoffs, but three games remain, including a critical clash at San Jose San Jose, city, United States

said. ``It feels great. The biggest thing is that we're in control of our destiny.''

The Avengers had an 18-point lead midway through the third quarter and - no surprise - it was anything but safe. Arizona scored 16 unanswered points to pull within 38-36 and took a 49-45 lead on a 2-yard run by Siaha Burley Siaha Burley (born 1977-07-16) is an American Arena Football League (AFL) player with the Utah Blaze. He wears number 5 for the Blaze, and plays wide receiver. In 2005 he won the AFL Offensive Player of the Year after having a spectacular season, hauling in 117 receptions for 1,542  with 6:54 left.

The Avengers answered on the next possession on a great catch by receiver Tony Locke, who had a one-handed grab in the back of the end zone for a 52-49 Avengers lead with 4:16 left.

Sherdrick Bonner, the former Cal State Northridge quarterback, threw six touchdown passes for the Rattlers (4-9), and Kaleo threw six TD passes for the Avengers.

Arizona had won three of its previous four games on the heels of a seven-game losing streak.

Bonner, 36, missed three games with a knee injury and returned last week, but he looked rusty. Arizona trailed just 24-20 at halftime despite three first-half turnovers, two of which the Avengers cashed in for scores.

``This shows that we've been persevering all season,'' Ingram said.

The Avengers took a 38-20 lead midway through the third quarter after Bonner was sacked by Silas Demary deep in Rattlers territory. All of Bonner's first-half touchdowns went to his favorite target, Burley bur·ley

The Avengers also scored off a turnover in the second quarter.

Locke, the Avengers' surprise this season, made four touchdown receptions.
