AREAS PUSH PANEL PICKS.Byline: Janette Williams Staff Writer ALTADENA - The fledgling Altadena Foothills Conservancy is flexing its muscles to place its president in the new shared Altadena/La Crescenta seat on the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy The Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy is an agency of the state of California in the United States founded in 1979 and dedicated to the acquisition of land in the Santa Susana and Santa Monica Mountains and the Simi Hills, north and west of Los Angeles, for preservation as open advisory board. The two areas are both pushing candidates but insist they have similar concerns. La Crescenta, with no local conservancy, will nominate Town Councilman Vasken Yardemian for the advisory board seat, said La Crescenta Town Council President Charles Beatty.. ``Altadena has worked very hard to obtain the legislation, and it's sad there's not more than one seat available,'' Beatty said. ``But as for who should sit, I believe it should be the person most qualified. If they're the right person, I think they will consider both sides.'' La Crescenta shares similar concerns and the same goals as Altadena, Beatty said, with proposals for the 500-house Oakmont development in the neighboring neigh·bor n. 1. Altadena plans to nominate its conservancy council president, environmental scientist Nancy Steele, to the advisory board. ``I think if we can get the joint seat this year, it will be very useful - it's our main priority,'' said Astrid Ellersieck, a founding member of the Altadena panel. ``Since we created the amendment to the bill in the first place, we really deserve it in the first year.'' Since the group formed about nine months ago, the Altadena Foothills Conservancy members have lobbied hard to get a local representative on the body that oversees a vast swath of the county, including the foothills above Altadena. It was partly through their efforts that an amended bill by state Sen. Adam Schiff
