AREA WALKERS RAISE $80,000 FOR MARCH OF DIMES.

LANCASTER - More than $80,000 - a local record - was raised for the March of Dimes
For the Canadian charitable organization, see Ontario March of Dimes and March of Dimes Canada.
March of Dimes is the name of a United States health charity, whose mission is to improve the health of babies.
 in the Antelope Valley's WalkAmerica last weekend.

About 2,000 people participated in the event Saturday at Lancaster City Park and Sunday at Edwards Air Force Base Edwards Air Force Base, U.S. military installation, 301,000 acres (121,805 hectares), S Calif., NE of Lancaster; est. 1933. It is one of the largest air force bases in the United States and has the world's longest runway. .

``The Edwards folks have done a tremendous job this year,'' said Harry Fulmore, March of Dimes community director, noting a big increase in money raised there.

One boost this year came from local youths.

``The schools have become a lot more involved in it. Almost every high school had participated at some level,'' Fulmore said.

The March of Dimes supports regional and national research on birth defects birth defects, abnormalities in physical or mental structure or function that are present at birth. They range from minor to seriously deforming or life-threatening. LANCASTER - Dog owners, take note.

The city is inviting your pets to strut their stuff May 10 at the Man's Best Friend Contest and Alpo Canine Frisbee Disc Championships.

Both events, popular with and free to human spectators, will be at Lancaster City Park on 10th Street West at Avenue K-8.

Free dog food samples will be available. Veterinarians Veterinarians and veterinary surgeons (vets) are medical professionals who operate exclusively on animals. Well-known and notable veterinarians include:
  • Wayne Allard, a U.S.
 and trainers will be there to answer questions. Registration will begin at 9:30 a.m.

In the Man's Best Friend Contest, which will start at 10 a.m., there will be awards in an array of categories, including for the tallest, the smallest and the most entertaining pets. The Frisbee-catching competition will start at 10:30 a.m.
