The Purim holiday dates back 2,500 years and commemorates Esther's deliverance of the Jews in Persia from a massacre plotted by Haman.

The temple uses the holiday to celebrate salvation as well as to raise money for a variety of congregation charitable service groups, Johnson said.

``It's helping lots of people,'' he said.
