AREA TEENS AMONG SPOTLIGHT FINALISTS.

Students from Valencia and Burbank are among a dozen Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  teens who bested more than 700 others to win spots as finalists in the Los Angeles Music Center's 1998 Spotlight Awards competition.

The 12 will vie for cash scholarships totaling $45,000 at the 10th annual awards competition March 24 at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion The Dorothy Chandler Pavilion is one of the halls in the Los Angeles Music Center (which is one of the three largest performing arts centers in the United States). The Music Center's other halls include the Mark Taper Forum, Ahmanson Theatre, and Walt Disney Concert Hall. , Music Center spokeswoman Karen Klemens said Wednesday.

The program encourages and rewards gifted young people who hope to pursue careers in the performing and visual arts, including ballet, jazz/modern dance, classical vocal music, musical theater vocal music, classical instrumental music and jazz instrumental music, Klemens said.

The finalists will compete for top prizes of $5,000 scholarships in each category and $2,500 for runners-up.

The area finalists are:

Musical theater voice: Katrina Roth, 16, a sophomore at John Burroughs High School John Burroughs High School is a public high school located in Burbank, California. Emilio Urioste, Jr. is the current principal. The school was built in the 1920's, but wasn't established as a high school until 1948. The school was named after naturalist John Burroughs.  in the Burbank Unified School District A unified school district is a school district which includes both primary school (kindergarten through middle school or junior high) and high school (grades 9-12). In Illinois, these districts are called unit school districts. .

Ballet: Heather McGreevey, 15, a freshman at Valencia High School Valencia High School may refer to:
  • Valencia High School (Placentia, California), a public high school in Placentia, California.
  • Valencia High School (Santa Clarita, California), a public high school in Santa Clarita, California.
 in the William S. Hart School District.
