Conejo Valley The Conejo Valley is a region spanning both Southeastern Ventura County and Northwest Los Angeles County in Southern California, United States. It was discovered in 1542 by Spanish explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, and eventually became part of the Rancho El Conejo land grant by and Oak Park performed the highest of the 20 districts in Ventura County, ranking in the 60th to 70th percentiles in math and language skills. Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969. and Moorpark hovered closer to the 50th percentile percentile, n the number in a frequency distribution below which a certain percentage of fees will fall. E.g., the ninetieth percentile is the number that divides the distribution of fees into the lower 90% and the upper 10%, or that fee level , the level that delineates the national average. ``It gives us room to get better,'' said county schools Superintendent Charles Weis, who released the results at a news conference. ``Certainly those districts that scored below the 50th percentile have a lot of room to grow. But even those who scored above were not in the 80th and 90th percentiles. They have some work to do, too.'' The multiple-choice, English-language exam was administered last spring to second- through 11th-graders, testing their knowledge of math, reading, language and spelling. Science and social science exams also were given to students in ninth, 10th and 11th grades. Of the 139 grades reported by Ventura County districts, 64 scored in the 50th percentile or above in reading; 71 scored that high in math; and 78 in tested above the national average percentile in language. Because most of the county districts chose not to test their high school students in spelling, only 129 grades reported results in that subject. Of those, only 43 grades tested above the 50th percentile mark. Weis said that he did not expect the districts to do so well on the Stanford 9, primarily because it is the first year it was used, and it has been several years since students have taken standardized tests A standardized test is a test administered and scored in a standard manner. The tests are designed in such a way that the "questions, conditions for administering, scoring procedures, and interpretations are consistent" [1] . ``We would have guessed that they would be worse,'' he said. ``We didn't expect any of our schools to score in the top quarter percentile in the nation.'' Most school district officials were not available for comment Friday. Others refused to comment until the state officially releases the results Tuesday. Kenneth Moffett, interim superintendent for the Simi Valley district, said he was ``not dissatisfied'' with the results. ``It's the first time our district has taken these and we'll be taking a good look at these results,'' he said. Officials will analyze the strengths and weaknesses reflected by the tests and will alter the curriculum accordingly, Moffett said. However, the scores dip after eighth grade, and officials said there may be a difference in what was being taught at each grade level and what was being tested. The results also show a wide discrepancy DISCREPANCY. A difference between one thing and another, between one writing and another; a variance. (q.v.) 2. English-only students scored in the 72nd percentile, while limited-proficiency youngsters scored in the 23rd percentile. In the Moorpark district, English-only fourth-graders scored in the 64th percentile on the reading test, while those with limited proficiency scored in the 9th. Weis said that while the test scores and national rankings are an important indicator of how schools are doing, they are not the only way to determine how students will do when they graduate. ``These tests don't test perseverance Perseverance See also Determination.
