AREA STUDENTS NAMED TO MILITARY ACADEMIES.

Byline: Jesse Hiestand Daily News Staff Writer

Fifteen young men and women from Ventura County got the call Friday that they'd been waiting for - the good news that they'd received a congressional appointment to U.S. military academies.

``They are the cream of the crop of our young people and truly the leaders of tomorrow,'' said Rep. Elton Gallegly Elton W. Gallegly (born March 7 1944), an American politician, has been a Republican member of the United States House of Representatives since 1987, currently representing the 24th District of California (map). , R-Oxnard.

Gallegly said he planned to call each of the eight appointees in his congressional district Noun 1. congressional district - a territorial division of a state; entitled to elect one member to the United States House of Representatives

personally to tell them they've made the grade.

``There's absolutely nothing that gives me greater personal satisfaction than being able to call a parent or young man or woman and advise them that they've been appointed to a military academy,'' he said.

``This is more than a full scholarship. It's something that a very, very select few ever qualify for, either scholastically or on a citizenship or personal level.''

Seven others were appointed from the 24th District by former Rep. Anthony C. Beilenson Anthony Charles Beilenson (born October 26, 1932) was a Democratic congressman from Southern California, who served in the United States House of Representatives from 1977 to 1997.

Beilenson was born in New Rochelle, New York and grew up in wealthy suburban New York City.

He has been a Democratic member of the United States House of Representatives since 1997, representing California's At-large congressional district. , was unavailable for comment Friday.

Each congressional district gets at least one appointment to each of the nation's four military academies each year, Gallegly said.

In the summer before they enter 12th grade, interested students submit an application to his office. Those who meet the minimum standards in terms of grades, test scores and other criteria go before the Academy Selection Board, a panel of retired and active military officers and educators, for a lengthy oral interview.

Rather than choose nominees from the pool of candidates, Gallegly said he submits their names to the academies, then makes his decisions based on their recommendations.

``We want to take politics completely out of the process,'' he said.

The following graduating seniors were accepted to academies for the fall semester:
