AREA SOFTBALL TEAMS OFF TO SHAKY START\Hart tournament brings surprises.

Byline: Lee Barnathan Special to the Daily News

The first week of the high school softball softball, variant of baseball played with a larger ball on a smaller field. Invented (1888) in Chicago as an indoor game, it was at various times called indoor baseball, mush ball, playground ball, kitten ball, and, because it was also played by women, ladies'  program brought surprises, both pleasant and otherwise, to Santa Clarita Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  area teams.

The four schools were entered in the annual Hart Tournament, and none advanced to the championship bracket.

Canyon, with a new coach and a young team, and Valencia, a first-year varsity program, might not have been expected to get that far.

But Saugus, which started the season top-ranked in the Daily News poll, and Hart, which figured to challenge Saugus for the Foothill League title, were considered favorites to at least make the championship bracket.

The tournament will continue today at Newhall Park, Hart High School Hart High School may refer to:

. Among local teams, Hart and Valencia will match up at 9 a.m. at Newhall Park, and Saugus will meet Canyon at Saugus High at 10 a.m.

A look at where the four teams stand, alphabetically, with records through Thursday's games:

Canyon (1-1): "We did better than I thought we would" was coach Larry Mohr's estimation of his team's showing last week.

The Cowboys opened against powerful Camarillo and trailed 4-0 after five innings before Mohr started substituting in an attempt to play everyone. Canyon was hurt most by its eight errors in an eventual blowout.

But in the second game, Canyon defeated Sylmar behind Danielle Fiddler's four hits.

From those games came Fiddler as the likely first baseman and returner Carly Andrade as the shortstop. Pitcher Lisa Villasenor also impressed Mohr by not giving up an earned run earned run

in the Camarillo game and striking out seven in the two contests.

Most of the other position starters remain unclear.

"When we get the round pegs in the round holes, where we want to put people, we'll be decent," Mohr said. "It's up to Lisa, how she throws, and she's as fiery as anyone."

Hart (2-2): The reason coach Al Weil expects the Indians to compete for the league title is senior pitcher Mary Colleran. But Colleran has struggled, making uncharacteristic un·char·ac·ter·is·tic

"I thought she'd be on top of her game, but she's struggling quite a bit," Weil said. "I'm not sure why. If I knew that, I'd be rich."

Colleran has pitched extensively in travel ball, but Weil said her arm appears fine.

Weil also said vocal leadership is lacking. The two seniors on the team, Colleran and Chris Davis Chris Davis is the name of a couple of people:

  • Chris Davis (football player), a football player for the Tennessee Titans.
, are not loud types. Junior Dani Socha is having eligibility problems and has yet to start a game this season, although Weil said she was to start in Friday's home game with Calabasas.

The defense also has been suspect and the hitting inconsistent. But Weil isn't worried yet.

"Our thing is to get ready (for) league. We don't dwell on record, but if you're not winning, people start to talk, and kids maybe doubt themselves," Weil said.

Saugus (2-1) "We were overrated Overrated was a Horde World of Warcraft guild, based on the US Black Dragonflight Realm. On November 2 2006, the majority of the guild members were indefinitely banned from the game for use of (or directly benefiting from) a third-party "wall-hack", used to bypass content  to begin with," said coach Ron Hilton. "Eventually, we're gonna be pretty good."

It would help if pitcher Jamie Gillies can return from a sore back. She has yet to pitch, and Hilton said she might get in a couple of innings today - if she was able to throw pain-free Friday in practice. The expected warm weather should help.

But there's more than just Gillies. Freshman Stephanie Blair's pitching has impressed Hilton, but the team has just six hits in its three games and one scrimmage. That includes a one-hitter by El Camino Real's Tami Jones last weekend in the Hart Tournament.

Last year, Nicole Giordano and Jill Passafiume hit between .400 and .500, Chris Gill was close to .400, and Amanda Melton mel·ton

was near .350. This year, they're not starting like that.

In addition, Amanda Reyes is hammering the ball, but right at people.

"So I've got five legitimate hitters," Hilton said. "But right now, we're not hitting."

There also are positions to be finalized See finalization.  and gotten used to. Giordano is out of the outfield and at shortstop, which requires an adjustment period, Hilton said. Reyes and Lauren Blair are battling for the starting catcher spot, and Tracy Passafiume or Shannon McRoy will play first base.

Valencia (0-3) As soon as the Vikings stop self-destructing with one bad inning, they might start winning games, said coach Donna Lee Donna Lee is a bebop jazz standard itself based on the chord changes of the traditional jazz standard "(Back Home Again in) Indiana".[1] It is named after the now-obscure bassist Donna Lee. .

Against Granada Hills, they were leading 1-0 and outhitting the Highlanders 6-3 in the seventh inning when one error led to another, which led to another, which led to four Granada Hills runs and a 4-1 final score.

"I could hear (Granada Hills) parents in the background saying, 'Oh, my God, we almost got beat by a first-year varsity team In the United States and Canada and UK, varsity sports teams are the principal athletic teams representing a college, university, or high school or other secondary school. Such teams compete against the principal athletic teams at other colleges/universities, or in the case of ,' " Lee said.

Against Hoover, Valencia lost in the eighth inning after committing an error. Miscues in the fourth inning helped Highland to a 3-0 victory.

Also, the Vikings are injured. Sarah Villegas has a bad kneecap kneecap (patella), saucer-shaped bone at the front of the knee joint; it protects the ends of the femur, or thighbone, and the tibia, the large bone of the foreleg. The kneecap is embedded in the tendon tissue of the quadriceps femoris, a large thigh muscle. , Kim Mutaw has tendinitis in her elbow and Tasha Garcia has an injured shoulder.

April Markham, the team's only pitcher, and Jennifer Harling, who is 6 for 9 at the plate in three games, are keeping the team in the games.
