Perhaps the two Golden League powers who won 27 and 24 games, respectively, last season again will meet in Monday's final, like they did one year ago when Quartz Hill beat the host Bulldogs 5-0.

``You have to get past Quartz Hill to win the tournament. That's just the way it is,'' Highland coach Glenda Glenda may refer to: People

, so meeting them in this tournament is in the back of my mind.''

Quartz Hill parlayed the momentum of winning last year's classic. Led by Daily News Player of the Year Jodie Cox, who pitched a two-hitter with 10 strikeouts and hit a home run in the title game, Quartz Hill went on to capture a league championship and the school's - and region's - first Southern Section title.

Cox is back, and so is Quartz Hill in a major way. She has pitched the Rebels (9-1) to nine straight wins and is coming off a two-homer, six-RBI performance against respectable Valencia on Tuesday. She led the region with nine home runs last year and she has four in 32 at-bats this season.

``If we all do our job, we can do good in this tournament,'' said freshman Angela D'Errico, Gonzales' replacement at third base. ``We want to go all the way in this tournament, play our best and show what we're made of. But it's not just about Highland and Quartz Hill. We're going out there to play against all the teams.''

Highland opens Friday at 7 p.m. against Sultana, a good team that came one strike away from beating Quartz Hill one week ago before the Rebels pulled out a 5-4 win. If the Bulldogs win, they meet either Arcadia or Louisville on Saturday at 2 p.m.

Quartz Hill, ranked No. 1 in Division II, faces Victor Valley on Friday at 5 p.m., then perhaps Harvard-Westlake (No. 3 in Division IV) or Palmdale at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
