AREA LAWMAKERS NOMINATE TEENS FOR U.S. ACADEMIES.

From a student who wrote her qualifying essay about building model airplanes to another who has risen to the top of the class at Thousand Oaks High School Thousand Oaks High School is a high school established in 1962 and located in Thousand Oaks, California. It is a California Distinguished School, and offers curriculum at all levels for Thousand Oaks students. The mascot is the lancer. , 26 teen-agers have captured the attention of their local congressman to win nominations to the nation's military academies.

Rep. Brad Sherman Bradley J. "Brad" Sherman (born October 24 1954) is an American politician. He has been a Democratic member of the United States House of Representatives since 1997, representing California's At-large congressional district. , D-Woodland Hills, has nominated the high school students from his district - including 10 from Thousand Oaks Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964. Avocados, citrus, vegetables, strawberries, and nursery products are grown. , Agoura Hills, Newbury Park and Oak Park - for the nation's prestigious colleges.

``I'm really proud of the young people,'' said Sherman, who was scheduled to honor the nominees during a Tuesday night ceremony. ``Their level of dedication is impressive. Their academics are impressive. Their community service is impressive.''

Rep. Elton Gallegly Elton W. Gallegly (born March 7 1944), an American politician, has been a Republican member of the United States House of Representatives since 1987, currently representing the 24th District of California (map). , R-Oxnard, nominated 18 teens, including Ventura resident Matthew Christopher Foster Christopher Knollys Foster (27 September 1904 - 4 December 1971) was an English cricketer: a right-handed batsman.

Born in Tarrinton Farm, Herefordshire, he was the son of Henry Foster, one of the famous seven Foster brothers, and like them played first-class cricket for
, who already has been accepted to the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis.

Students applying to the nation's military academies need to be nominated by a congressional representative - either their local member of the House of Representatives Member of the House of Representatives member n (US) → membre m de la Chambre des représentants  or one of their U.S. senators.

Most of the students undergo a review, similar to college entrance procedures, to earn the nomination, said a spokesman from Sherman's office.

Students are judged on their essays, letters of reference, Scholastic Assessment Test scores, grades and extracurricular activities. Sometimes interviews are conducted with the elected officials or their staffs.

Typically, one student is chosen for each of the academies from both Sherman and Gallegly's districts. Gallegly's district includes most of Ventura County and Sherman's district includes the Conejo and western San Fernando valleys San Fernando Valley
