The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department (LASD) is a local law enforcement agency that serves Los Angeles County, California.
will act as Santa Clarita police chief under the city's $11.5 million contract with the department.

Minutello, who lived in the Santa Clarita Valley The Santa Clarita Valley is the valley of the Santa Clara River in Southern California. It stretches through Los Angeles County and Ventura County. Its main population center is the city of Santa Clarita. The valley was part of the 48,612-acre (19,672.  for 14 years, was selected by a panel of city leaders, community members and Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  County officials over three other candidates.

``It's nice to work in a city you're familiar with. It's like coming home,'' Minutello said Friday from her Whittier office. ``I've worked so many areas in my career - I've learned about budgets, personnel, working patrol. That has prepared me for this.''

Hired in 1974, the mother of two college students began as a patrol deputy in Santa Clarita before promotions led her to tours in internal affairs, operations and as commander of the Family Crimes Bureau, where she oversaw detectives investigating child-abuse and domestic-violence cases.

While Minutello's start date has not been announced, the Thousand Oaks resident said she is personally acquainted with one of the area's biggest issues: rapid growth and congestion The condition of a network when there is not enough bandwidth to support the current traffic load.

``That's the main thing, the traffic and the growth,'' she said. ``Both of my kids graduated from Canyon High. I know that will be a big part of the job, making sure traffic flows.''

One of the first congratulatory calls, she said, came from her predecessor, Rodriguez, who after five years as Santa Clarita's top law enforcement officer, was promoted to commander in charge of 11 stations.

Asked about her status as the first woman to hold the job, Minutello was frank.

``I'm honored to be selected as the first female (captain) at the station, but I really don't see it as an issue,'' she said. ``I've never felt that (gender) was an issue in the Sheriff's Department. It's a wonderful place to work.''

Raised in the Los Feliz area, Minutello is a member of the FBI National Academy, 208th session, and has received specialized training in interview and interrogation interrogation
