AREA GROUPS PRAISED FOR SUPPORTING WWII MEMORIAL.

PALMDALE - City officials commended American Legion American Legion, national association of male and female war veterans, founded (1919) in Paris. Membership is open to veterans of World Wars I and II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War.  Post 348, American Legion Post 771, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3552 and Chapel of the Valley Mortuary for their support of the National World War II Memorial The National World War II Memorial is a National Memorial to all Americans that served in the armed forces and on the home front during World War II. It is located on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. .

Groundbreaking is scheduled for Saturday in Washington, D.C., for the monument. World War II veterans are the only veterans without a monument of their own.

``All gave some, some gave all,'' said Jack Beal, Post 348 commander, standing with city officials in front of the new flagpole at Poncitlan Square.

Donations totaling nearly $100 million have been raised to construct and maintain the memorial, which will be located on a 17.4 acre site between the Washington Monument Washington Monument, obelisk-shaped tower, 555 ft 5 1-9 in. (169.3 m) high, located on a 106-acre (43-hectare) site at the west end of the Mall, Washington, D.C.; dedicated 1885.  and the Lincoln Memorial Lincoln Memorial, monument, 107 acres (45 hectares), in Potomac Park, Washington, D.C.; built 1914–17. The building, designed by Henry Bacon and styled after a Greek temple, has 36 Doric columns representing the states of the Union at the time of Lincoln's .

Chapel of the Valley Mortuary is collecting names for the Registry of Remembrances associated with the World War II memorial.

``Everyone's welcome to participate that helped in World War II and made the nation what it is today,'' said Roger Persons, director of Chapel of the Valley Mortuary. ``World War II veterans and 'Rosie the Riveter' and 'Mike the Welder' and people of that nature, those people are also eligible.''

There is no charge to submit the name of a friend or relative for the registry. The mortuary is also accepting donations toward the construction of the memorial. For more information, call Persons at (661) 947-7118.

LOCAL VETERANS DAY OBSERVANCES

LANCASTER - American Legion Post 311 will host a Veterans Day service at 10 a.m. Saturday at Joshua Memorial Park and Mortuary, 808 E. Lancaster Blvd.

Following the ceremony, participants will join in the National Funeral Director's Association's ``Celebration of Freedom'' program by releasing 300 balloons in support of the World War II Memorial being built in Washington, D.C.

PALMDALE - The Antelope Valley Service Organization Association, a group of more than 30 local service clubs, will hold a Veterans Day ceremony at 11 a.m. Saturday at Desert Lawn Memorial Park, 2200 E. Ave.

Palmdale Mayor Jim Ledford and Air Force Maj. Tom Sparaco of Plant 42 will be among the guest speakers.

LAKE LOS ANGELES - Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2989 will host a Veterans Day ceremony at 11 a.m. Saturday at Lake Los Angeles Community Park, Avenue P West near 170th Street East.

The program will be headed by Alex Hernandez, Maurice Kunkel and Gil Rascon, with a color guard ceremony by Dan Pena and Jim Plinksi. Vicki Hefler will sing the national anthem and ``God Bless America.''

Guest speakers representing various organizations throughout the community and a bell ceremony by Roger Ryan will round out the formal ceremony. A community potluck will follow the tribute.

ROSAMOND - American Legion Post 490 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9657 will hold the eighth annual Veterans Day ceremony at 11 a.m. Saturday at Rosamond Park.

The guest speaker will be Col. Harry A. Talbot, mobilization assistant to the commander of the Air Force Flight Test Center at Edwards Air Force Base Edwards Air Force Base, U.S. military installation, 301,000 acres (121,805 hectares), S Calif., NE of Lancaster; est. 1933. It is one of the largest air force bases in the United States and has the world's longest runway. .

There will be a raising of the national colors and Prisoner of War PRISONER OF WAR. One who has been captured while fighting under the banner of some state. He is a prisoner, although never confined in a prison.

At the end of World War II, Korea was divided at the 38th parallel into Soviet (North Korean) and U.S. (South Korean) zones of occupation. .

The Air Force Blue Eagles Honor Guard will perform, and taps will be played.
