CANYON COUNTRY - The Sulphur Springs School District The Sulphur Springs School District is a school district in the Santa Clarita Valley that serves portions of the Canyon Country and Newhall communities within the city of Santa Clarita, California. As of March 26, 2006, it has 8 elementary schools.  adopted a nearly $30 million budget for the 2003-04 school year that includes about $725,000 in salary and other reductions as officials try to juggle expected funding cuts without decimating classroom programs.

The spending plan approved by the governing board Noun 1. governing board - a board that manages the affairs of an institution

Wednesday projects about $28.5 million in revenue for the new school year. Expenditures are estimated at $26.4 million - about $725,000 less than the previous year as officials implement early retirement incentives and other savings.

The plan also assumes the Legislature enacts Gov. Gray Davis' May budget draft, which includes 1.2 percent reduction in overall student funding to counter an estimated $38.8 billion state deficit. Still, the district expects the current enrollment of 5,500 to increase by 60, generating additional money.

By year's end, officials expect to carry a 4.3 percent reserve of about $1.5 million.

``Generally, the budget looks stable right now,'' Superintendent Robert Nolet said.

State law requires local school districts to submit a budget by June 30, even as partisan infighting in·fight·ing

``We know what our expenditures are,'' Nolet said. ``We can reduce our expenditures. But we don't know Don't know (DK, DKed)

Of the $725,000 reduction, about $500,000 comes from salary savings through an early retirement incentive program. Among those departing through the program are several longtime administrators, including Mitchell Community School Principal Judy Heyn who will retire after 33 years with Sulphur Springs Sulphur Springs, city (1990 pop. 14,062), seat of Hopkins co., NE Tex., in a farm area; inc. 1859. To cut costs, the district is adopting an alternate program in kindergarten that allows classes of 30 students. But it would require at least a half-day of math and English instruction in groups of 20.
