AREA CRICKETERS WELL-TRAVELED.Byline: Kirby Lee Special to the Daily News The Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region, Cricket Association team might have been assembled from players in local leagues, but - in reality - the team represented a large portion of the globe. SCCA Seattle Cancer Care Alliance SCCA Squamous Cell Carcinoma SCCA Southern California Cricket Association SCCA Southern California Contractors Association SCCA Sonoma County Conservation Action - broke his hand in practice and will not play in the five-day competition through Sunday. The international flavor was apparent Thursday in the four-team tournament. Reggae music blasted in the background as the SCCA played Jamaica and the United States played India on adjacent fields. A sparse throng of family, friends and curious observers weathered 100-degree temperatures to watch the seven-hour matches. A large crowd, however, is expected for today's 10:30 a.m. match between Jamaica and a team from the local Jamaican community. Jamaica defeated SCCA. Jamaica had 220 for 4 wickets. SCAA SCAA Specialty Coffee Association of America SCAA School Curriculum and Assessment Authority (England) SCAA South China Athletic Association SCAA Spill Control Association of America SCAA State Communities Aid Association had 218 in 36 overs. In the other match, USA beat India. India had 293 for 6 with the USA scoring 120 all out. ``I've always been a cricketer,'' said SCCA co-manager Allan Billson, 57, of Van Nuys (and an England native). ``I was playing here two weeks after I came here. We're fanatics and once you play you're addicted.'' SCCA players Imran Sarwar of Granada Hills and Newton Campbell of Reseda, both playing on their home field at Woodley Park, followed similar paths to continue their cricket careers. Campbell, 36, a cable-television technician, has played for the past 12 years with the Van Nuys-based Corinthians Cricket Club, after moving from Jamaica to the United States. Sarwar, 28, a soda-company sales representative, played as a child in Pakistan before moving to the U.S. eight years ago. ``This tournament is good for Southern California,'' Campbell said. ``It gives a lot of younger players exposure to this high level of cricket. This is just the starting point for us right now.'' Campbell and Sarwar also hope exposure from the tournament will lead to appreciation for cricket by their U.S. friends. ``They know about baseball a lot, they really don't know Don't know (DK, DKed) "Don't know the trade." A Street expression used whenever one party lacks knowledge of a trade or receives conflicting instructions from the other party. about cricket,'' Sarwar said. ``Whenever I talk to them, they get amazed, like, `What is this game?' Now, they can get a chance to come out and see it.'' |
