``It fell about 50 feet off the side of the freeway,'' Sweeney said. The identity of the driver was being withheld pending family notification.

Dwight Wiggins, a Santa Clarita road worker checking for mudslides on the nearby Sierra Highway, rushed to assist the trucker and was injured when a pickup truck skidded over the side of the freeway and landed atop the downed rig.

Wiggins was treated for facial wounds at Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital and later released.

The driver of the second truck, Medel Nino, 24, of Newhall was also treated and expected to be released from the hospital, Sweeney said.

Sweeney said a driver traveling more than 100 mph on the wet freeway hit a car and caused a 10-car chain reaction collision. There were no serious injuries.

The day began with a 13-vehicle collision on the Golden State Freeway The Golden State Freeway is a north-south freeway running through Kern County and Los Angeles County, California. Sweeney said the driver of a big rig, which was traveling at about 35 mph, lost control of his vehicle, touching off the 4:45 a.m. collision.

``Because of the wet roadway, the rig jackknifed and was hit from behind by another truck,'' Sweeney said.

Authorities said that started the chain-reaction collision that stranded two busloads of skiers returning from a trip to Lawton, Utah. A CHP squad car also was wrecked.

``When the CHP supervisor arrived at the scene he got out of his car and began clearing the lanes of traffic,'' Sweeney said. ``Moments later another truck happened upon the scene and drove over the top of the CHP car, smashing it,'' he said.

CHP Officer Rick Sirovy, who had been driving the squad car, was not injured.

A truck driver, who complained of back and neck injuries, also was hospitalized.

The crash was nearly identical to a 14-truck pileup Saturday at the same location, where three people were injured.

``We know there is a problem coming out of the truck lanes. We posted warning signs at least two hours before the crash because of the rain,'' Sweeney said.

``We want people to know when it's raining the road becomes slippery and everyone should adjust their speeds,'' Sweeney said. Sweeney also advised those driving cars to keep out of the truck lanes, particularly when it's raining.
