Luan Truong is only 12, but he's already familiar with the sacrifices needed to make a better life.

On Thursday, Luan beamed as his father was awarded a degree in business marketing from Pierce College In 2006 the Library won a national Excellence award. Academics
Pierce College offers associate's degrees, mainly in the arts and sciences. There are also certificate programs in early childhood education, social services, dental hygienist, and others.

Luoeng Truong said he hopes to be a role model for his three children, ages 10 months to 12 years.

On Thursday, Truong was among more than 1,400 students participating in graduation ceremonies at Pierce College, Los Angeles Mission College Los Angeles Mission College is a two-year community college located in Sylmar, California neighborhood of Los Angeles in the San Fernando Valley, United States. At Los Angeles Mission College, more than 240 graduates participated in the first commencement ceremony on campus in three years. Since 1994, campus construction has forced officials to hold graduation ceremonies elsewhere.

During the afternoon event, graduates listened to keynote speaker Assemblyman Tony Cardenas, D-Panorama City, describe how role models help shape students' lives.

About 834 students attended an afternoon graduation ceremony at Valley College's Monarch Stadium.

At Pierce College, about 950 graduates received associate's degrees and certificates in vocational areas such as automotive technology, gardening and office communications.

An additional 300 plan to complete their undergraduate studies at Cal State Northridge, UC Santa Barbara and UCLA UCLA University of California at Los Angeles
