AREA CODE GAMES: BAEZA MAKES STATEMENT.

Byline: Heather Gripp Staff Writer

Eddie Baeza hasn't had many opportunities to show off his baseball skills this summer. He took advantage of the one he got last week, turning in one of the best performances at the week-long Area Code Games in Long Beach.

Baeza walked two and allowed one run but struck out four, using offspeed pitches in the 60s to set up a fastball consistently clocked in the low 90s.

Baeza also pitched two innings Thursday against the White Sox West and struck out three without any walks or runs.

``Before the first game, I got very nervous,'' he said. ``But after the first pitch, I was OK. I didn't see the scouts or anything when I was out there, all I saw was the glove glove, hand covering with a separate sheath for each finger. The earliest gloves, relics of the cave dwellers, closely resembled bags. Reaching to the elbow, they were most probably worn solely for protection and warmth. .''
