ARE MACHINES CAUSING BLIGHT? VENDING MACHINES TOO UGLY?

Byline: Sylvia L. Oliande Staff Writer

SIMI VALLEY Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  - Vending machines vending machine, coin-operated, automatic device for selling goods.  is taking a second look. Commissioners will talk tonight about regulating the machines for the first time, possibly requiring that they be shielded or moved inside the store.

``It's finally gotten to the point, in our new age of looking at the aesthetics of this, where I think it has become a concern to all of us,'' said Planning Commission Chairman Richard Kunz. ``I don't think we're looking at a prohibition, but screen them so that they don't show from the street.''

The panel will consider advising the Simi Valley City Council to amend the municipal code to control location of the machines. Now the only permits required for vending machines are those for the outlets and utilities necessary to run them.

The issue arose last summer during a joint meeting of the commission and the council. Some participants said they dislike the look the machines give stores.

They especially complained about a wall-length videotape videotape

City officials said an informal survey found there are typically one to four vending machines outside a supermarket or commercial center.

The size and shape varies, but the typical one is 6 feet tall, 3 1/2 feet wide and 2 1/2 feet deep, with graphics on three sides. The McDonald's machine is about 6 feet tall and 10 feet wide.

, manager of Jons Market on Tapo Canyon Road, said he would rather screen vending machines than bring them inside.

``They get more visibility that way,'' said Parks, whose store sells its private label sodas and rents vending space to others. If regulations change, ``I have no choice; I'd just go with the flow,'' he said.

The commission meeting is scheduled to begin at 7 tonight at City Hall, 2929 Tapo Canyon Road.
