ARCO GIFTS HELP PORT ANGELES AUTHORITIES PURCHASE EMERGENCY RESPONSE EQUIPMENT

PORT ANGELES, Wash., Nov. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Two grants totaling $12,000 were presented by ARCO Products Co. and ARCO Marine Inc., to the Port Angeles Police and Fire Departments today for the purchase of equipment to support community-based policing and increased response to dock and harbor emergencies.
The ARCO Products Co. contribution of $8,000 to the Port Angeles Police Department represents approximately 50 percent of the cost of a mobile police center, a 20-foot travel trailer to be equipped as a mobile police station. It may also serve as the police command post for emergencies or special events. Studies show that traditional police patrol cars have limited success during emergencies and create barriers between police and the community, Police Chief Steve Ilk said. The new center will give police an on-site presence in residential or business districts in response to community needs.
The ARCO Marine Inc. contribution of $4,000 to the Port Angeles Fire Department represents one-third of the purchase cost of a city harbor utility boat. The rigid-hull, inflatable craft is a fast-response vessel providing firefighting capability and support for dock, recreational boat and commercial vessel incidents. Purchase of the boat developed from meetings between ARCO Marine and Port Angeles officials.
ARCO Products representative Violet White and ARCO Marine's Jeff Shaw presented the checks to Police Chief Ilk and Fire Chief Larry Glenn during a ceremony this morning at the ARCO am/pm mini market at 807 So. Lincoln. Port Angeles Mayor Jim Hallett, City Council members and ARCO officials also attended.
"ARCO is committed to being part of the communities where we operate," said White, area manager of PSI Marketing, an ARCO subsidiary. "Community-based policing promotes outreach and crime-prevention activities, and we support that."
Shaw, ARCO Marine's representative in the Northwest, said: "ARCO Marine believes in prevention and preparedness. This boat purchase puts ARCO Marine and Port Angeles out in front on these issues."
ARCO Products Co. is the refining and marketing division of Los Angeles-based ARCO. The company operates more than 200 retail outlets in Washington state. It also has regional offices in Seattle and Redmond and a refinery in Ferndale. Tankers operated by ARCO Marine Inc., transport oil from Alaska to the ARCO refinery in Ferndale and other West Coast ports.
