 ARCO CHEMICAL ESTABLISHES ENVIRONMENTAL COMMITTEE
NEWTOWN SQUARE, Pa., Jan. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- As part of its

continuing commitment to the responsible management of its worldwide chemical business, ARCO Chemical (NYSE: RCM) today announced the establishment of an environmental committee to oversee the company's policies, procedures and practices in the areas of environment, health and safety.
David T. McLaughlin, president and chief executive officer of The Aspen Institute and a member of ARCO Chemical's board of directors, will chair the environmental committee. Other members appointed to the committee are James A. Middleton, executive vice president of Atlantic Richfield Company, and Alan R. Hirsig, president and chief executive officer of ARCO Chemical, both of whom are members of ARCO Chemical's board.
"Outstanding performance in the environmental, health and safety areas is vital to the well-being of our employees and our plant communities, as well as to the assets of our company," commented Hirsig. "Establishment of an environmental committee at the highest level of the company is another step forward in our efforpossible."
Over the last year, a major focus within ARCO Chemical has been the development of its "Manufacturing Excellence" program -- a comprehensive initiative designed to ensure safe and efficient manufacturing operations at the company's worldwide facilities. The core of the program is the development of rigorous manufacturing standards and the establishment of an internal auditing function to ensure that actual operations are consistent with the standards.
In September, the new position of vice president, Environmental, Engineering, and Manufacturing Programs, also was created. The position has responsibility for the company's worldwide manufacturing programs and audits, as well as engineering, technical services and environmental, health and safety performance. Morris Gelb, formerly vice president, Research and Engineering, was named to the new position.
The newly formed environmental committee will serve an oversight function, meeting with company management and reporting to the board of directors on the company's progress in implementing the Manufacturing Excellence initiative and its performance in the environmental, health and safety areas. The Environmental, Engineering, and Manufacturing organizations and others in the company will serve as resources to the environmental committee.
