ARCHAEOLOGISTS FINISHING WORK AT MISSION DIG SITE.

Byline: Rick Orlov Staff Writer

Archaeologists began wrapping up their work Friday on a Mission Hills site where workers building an animal shelter "Dog Pound" redirects here. For the rap group, see Tha Dogg Pound.

An animal shelter is a facility that houses homeless, lost or abandoned animals; primarily a large variety of dogs and cats.

``We have to do some research to figure out what it could have been used for,'' said John Foster, senior archaeologist and a vice president at Greenwood and Associates. ``We think it might have been part of a mill or something like that.''

Foster said he was surprised at the size of the platform as well as its good condition.

The site, at 11030 Stranwood Ave., has been transformed into an archaeological dig for the past two weeks after workers discovered a wall.

Foster said he sees no reason for the animal shelter project to be halted, particularly since the area that has been uncovered is designated to be a corral corral

``I would like to see some type of marker noting what we found and we will take steps to cover what we have to protect it,'' Foster said.

Foster said he hopes to complete his report next week.
