Business Editors

ARNHEM, The Netherlands--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 19, 2002

ARCADIS (Nasdaq:ARCAF; Euronext:ARCAD) announced today that ARCADIS Logos in Brazil, in which the Company has a 51% stake, has recently signed three agreements with respect to energy infrastructure to deliver electrical energy to the Brazilian government.

ARCADIS has signed the agreements as a partner in different consortia in which it has stakes of approximately 10%. The agreements, valid for a three-year period, are related to the Emergency Energy Program in Brazil. They involve the implementation of three electrical plants and two co-generation facilities, with a total capacity of 194 megawatt meg·a·watt

Brazil faced a severe energy crisis in June 2001, as limited amounts of rainfall have hampered the country's capacity to generate hydroelectric power hydroelectric power: see power, electric; water power.

since June 2001. In addition, overall growth in power generation capacity over the last decade has been insufficient to keep up with demand. The Emergency Energy Program, set up by the Brazilian authorities, is one of the efforts to mitigate future energy shortage and black outs.

In the face of the energy crisis, the government challenged the private sector to come up with short-term solutions to boost energy generation capacity. This resulted in proposals that offer a total additional capacity of 2,150 megawatt. In this specific program, stand-by thermal power units will be installed. These units can be operated in emergency circumstances and should come on stream at the end of June 2002. The energy facilities in which ARCADIS participates through consortia are: COCAL COCAL Coalition of Contingent Academic Labor (conference; Canada)  TERMOELETRICA and PIE-RP (21 MW) TERMOELETRICA (20 MW), two sugar and alcohol production units near Sao Paulo, which can produce energy from burning sugar cane and wood chips - scraps from pulp mills, according to according to

They are fully compatible with our strategy to generate more growth in the infrastructure segment. In the short term, these agreements deliver direct revenue in the form of services for design engineering, environmental consultancy, construction management and project development. In addition, revenue will be derived from providing additional power capacity online. Besides the revenue derived from stand-by power, we will sell the energy produced by these units, during the three-year period starting June 2002, according to the government demand for generation.
