ARCADA LAUNCHES WINDOWS '95 INITIATIVE; technology for intelligent backup and restore.

COMDEX/SPRING--ATLANTA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 28, 1995-- Arcada Software Arcada Software was a computer software company that was formed in early 1994 by the merger of Conner Software (the software division of Conner Peripherals) of Lake Mary, Florida, and Astora Software, formerly Quest Development Corporation, of San Luis Obispo, California.  today announced a new solution for data protection and storage management for Microsoft's Windows '95 desktop operating system The control program in a user's machine (desktop or laptop). Also called a "client operating system," Windows is the overwhelming majority while the Macintosh comes second. There are also several versions of Linux for the desktop. Contrast with network operating system. . Arcada's addition to its award-winning product family is called Backup for Windows '95. This new solution takes advantage of 32-bit performance to streamline data protection by leveraging Microsoft's Wizard technology.

"Arcada is the first enterprise data storage management company to offer a robust backup solution for Windows '95," said Anthony Bautista, Arcada's Advanced Desktop Business Unit Director. "Arcada Backup for Windows '95 sets a new standard in backup performance by taking full advantage of the operating system's strengths, including background operation, preemptive multitasking A multitasking method that shares processing time with all running programs. Preemptive multitasking creates a time-shared environment in which running programs receive a recurring slice of time from the CPU.  and multithreading Multitasking within a single program. It allows multiple streams of execution to take place concurrently within the same program, each stream processing a different transaction or message.  flexibility. Also, with a highly intuitive Windows '95 user interface, Arcada Backup for Windows '95 offers an easier, faster, and more reliable method for backup and data restoration."

Windows Provide Intelligent Backup and Restore Simplicity

An integral part of the Windows '95 backup solution is its use of Wizards. This advanced feature helps to guide the user step-by-step through the process of backing up and restoring data on Windows '95 workstations. This intelligent technology automates the process of backup and restore, and ensures that users do not miss a step.

However, users do have the option of either turning the Wizard technology on or off; they merely have to click on the Wizard icon if they want to be assisted through the backup and restore process. Thus, managing data is now faster, easier and more reliable than existing backup and restore procedures.

True 32-bit Architecture

Arcada Backup for Windows '95 is designed to take advantage of true 32-bit architecture, including 32-bit device driver support. Unlike other solutions which have been ported over from existing Windows applications, Arcada's Windows '95 solution was designed from the ground up as a full 32-bit application. As a result, its performance has been significantly increased to meet the demands of high performance minicartridge and SCSI SCSI

 tape drives.

Plug-and-Play Support

Arcada Backup for Windows '95 also is equipped with support for the operating system's Plug-and-Play standard for automated configuration and setup. For instance, when users add peripherals or hardware devices to their system, they can take advantage of built-in auto-configure support to ensure streamlined installation. "This is especially important to users who want to back up their systems, since the highest percentage of problems occur in the hardware device setup and configuration phase," Bautista said.

To further strengthen Plug-and-Play in the marketplace, industry leaders have begun forming relationships that leverage both hardware and software capabilities. Arcada has entered into a relationship with Tandberg Data Tandberg Data (OSE: TAD) is a company focused on data storage products, especially streamers, headquartered in Oslo, Norway. They are the only company still selling drives that use the QIC format (also known as SLR), but also produce VXA, LTO and DLT products, along with  which enables both organizations to offer a more user-friendly solution by using this plug and play technology. "Tandberg Data's partnership with Arcada Software furthers our commitment to make Plug-and-Play the industry standard for peripherals. The combination of Arcada's Backup for Windows '95 and Tandberg Data's Plug-and-Play compliant SCSI tape drives offer Windows '95 users the first true Plug-and-Play compliant 32-bit tape backup Using magnetic tape for storing duplicate copies of hard disk files. Users can add an internal or external tape drive to their desktop computers for backup purposes, and files are typically copied to the tapes using a backup utility that updates on a periodic schedule.  solution" said Jack Robinson Jack Robinson may refer to:
