ARCADA BACKUP EXEC FOR NETWARE V7 ADDRESSES ENTERPRISE RELIABILITY AND PERFORMANCE DEMANDS.CHICAGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 26, 1995--Arcada Software, Inc. today announced version 7 of Backup Exec Backup Exec is backup software for Microsoft Windows environments currently developed by Symantec. Backup Exec has a long history of being sold from one company to another. for NetWare, specifically designed to address the reliability and performance requirements for enterprise networks. Available September 4, Backup Exec for NetWare version 7 is designed to back up multi-platform Novell NetWare (operating system, networking) Novell NetWare - Novell, Inc.'s proprietary networking operating system for the IBM PC. NetWare uses the IPX/SPX, NetBEUI or TCP/IP network protocols. It supports MS-DOS, Microsoft Windows, OS/2, Macintosh and Unix clients. networks, and will receive Novell's Tested and Approved certification prior to availability. "Reliably backing up and restoring data is the most critical issue facing NetWare users today," said Pat Hanavan, director of the NetWare business unit for Arcada. "Users want to feel comfortable that the data they have backed up is complete and secure if a disaster occurs. One critical component of version 7 is its full compatibility with Novell's NetWare Directory Services See eDirectory. (networking) Netware Directory Services - (NDS) Novell, Inc.'s directory services for Netware, Windows NT, and Unix. The NDS directory represents each network resource (user, hardware, or application) as an object of a certain class, where each class has (NDS See eDirectory. NDS - Netware Directory Services ), which is crucial for consistent, reliable protection of complex NetWare 4 servers." Underscoring version 7's enhanced reliability and performance, Arcada and CENTRE Technologies, Inc. recently formed a strategic alliance in which the two companies are providing an integrated backup solution for NetWare 3.x and 4.x networks. Called CENTRE NetPack(TM), the integrated solution combines NetWare 3.x and 4.x with Arcada's Backup Exec for NetWare software. "As a Novell authorized OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) The rebranding of equipment and selling it. The term initially referred to the company that made the products (the "original" manufacturer), but eventually became widely used to refer to the organization that buys the products and , we could have bundled any backup software See backup program. "As a system vendor committed to delivering high performance, enterprise-wide networking solutions, we believe Arcada could best deliver the quality needed to make our NetPacks and server offerings successful," Hanson said. Reliability Enhancements Four enhancements combine to strengthen Backup Exec for NetWare's reliability in enterprise networks: -0-
-- SmartClient(TM) technology provides automated LAN backup
protection for failing hard disks. Developed with Compaq
Computer Corporation, this new technology predicts an
impending workstation hard disk failure and automatically
protects the workstation's data using Backup Exec's server
based data management software to protect the workstations
data. Arcada's ability to proactively protect all
workstations to a NetWare tape server, running as a Windows
95 system service in concert with Compaq's Intelligent
Manageability system software is a step beyond what the rest
of the backup market is integrating.
-- Server-independent fault tolerant backup enables
network managers to configure Backup Exec to selectively re-
route backups to alternate tape systems -- on the same or
on different servers -- for processing without
administrator intervention if the original tape system
fails. The administrator can control exactly which tape
system is selected for alternate processing, to allow
manageable fault tolerant protection. This unique
capability is not available from any other solution on the
market today.
-- Integration with Simple Network Management Protocol
(SNMP) management products, such as Novell's NetWare
Management System (NMS) and Hewlett Packard's OpenView,
enables Backup Exec to send alerts to any SNMP compliant
management console for centralized, automated monitoring
of all Backup Exec systems in the enterprise.
-- Enterprise AgentView(TM) technology enables all clients to
view all agents on the network regardless of protocol, so
that data can be viewed and selected for backup no matter
where it resides. For example, an administrator using a
Windows workstation -- which uses an IPX protocol -- can
"see" and interactively select other workstations and
servers using different protocols, such as TCP/IP (Unix
systems) or AppleTalk (Macintosh systems). Other backup
products force administrators to perform backups on
servers and workstations with differing protocols "in the
blind" -which means success or failure cannot be qualified
until the backup begins.Performance Enhancements
Backup Exec for NetWare version 7 addresses the performance needs of enterprise networks with high-volume backup requirements through the following new features: -0-
-- Agent Accelerator(TM) with Stac LZS compression
significantly increases backup performance by reducing the
amount of data transmitted over the network by an average of
50 to 75 percent. Agent Accelerator technology distributes
backup processing between the main server and remote
servers.
The combination of Agent Accelerator technology and
Stac compression significantly boosts remote server
backup performance by having the remote server pre-
process and compress directories and files for backup.
This not only lowers network traffic, it increases the
overall backup performance, especially in configurations
running multiple tape devices.
-- Dynamic Load Balancing allows users with multiple
drives in a single server to instruct Backup Exec to send
backup jobs to the "first available" tape drive
automatically, maximizing system performance and
throughput.
-- Concurrent tape drive support for up to 28 drives or
autoloaders requires only 45k of additional memory per
drive. Customers can derive true "tape server"
performance with up to 28 tape drives, yet have the
flexibility to configure the system to use only 5Mb of
total server memory. Competing products can require as
much as 1.5Mb additional memory per concurrent drive.
Other Enhancements
-- Enhanced tape format support enables Backup Exec to
read and restore data from Cheyenne's ARCserve Windows or
DOS Edition tape format and Storage Independent Data Format
(SIDF - ECMA 208) tapes, providing users an easy migration
path to Backup Exec. Version 7 also reads and writes
Microsoft Tape Format (MTF) 1.0.
-- Optional Oracle Agent for NetWare backs up and restores
Oracle for NetWare databases, even while they are being used
Administrators can back up entire Oracle databases while
they are active and on-line. With version 7, administrators
can perform backup and restore functions at the database,
as well as at the tablespace and individual file level --
providing administrators backup schedule flexibility within
databases, a level of support unique to Backup Exec.Pricing and Availability
