, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 10, 1995--Arcada Software today announced its strategy for delivering a suite of enterprise data protection and storage management solutions that is tightly integrated with Microsoft BackOffice. The foundation for Arcada's BackOffice strategy--Backup Exec 6.0 for Windows NT Server--will ship at the end of this month. Arcada will deliver components of its BackOffice strategy later this year.

Microsoft BackOffice is an integrated family of server applications that work together to allow customers to deploy applications that automate business processes, help speed and enhance decision making, and help lower the costs of training, installation and development throughout corporate computing systems.

Arcada, which developed the Windows NT backup utility and was recently selected by Microsoft to develop a backup utility for its forthcoming Exchange server, provides a way to protect and manage all BackOffice data--all from a single console across the enterprise.

"Arcada is on their third-generation of Windows NT Server backup solutions and has been an innovator in Windows NT development since the operating system's inception," said Richard Tong, Division Marketing Manager for Microsoft Corp.'s Business Systems Division. "Their leadership and experience has carried over into Microsoft BackOffice by providing a robust and tightly-integrated backup solution for the server applications family."

"With its BackOffice strategy, Microsoft has redefined the server's role within an enterprise by providing the major components for customers to automate their business," added David Krinker, Director of Arcada's Windows NT Business Unit. "We understand the server evolution outlined by Microsoft, and we are committing to this new paradigm New Paradigm

In the investing world, a totally new way of doing things that has a huge effect on business.

by providing an integrated backup solution for BackOffice and network backup, by enhancing the backup support provided by the BackOffice components, and by exploiting BackOffice's capabilities."

Backup Exec 6.0 for Windows NT Server

The cornerstone to Arcada's BackOffice strategy is Backup Exec 6.0 for Windows NT Server, the company's third-generation backup solution for Windows NT. Backup Exec 6.0 incorporates a 32-bit client/server architecture that allows network administrators to remotely control and monitor all network backup servers from a single console.

This way, network administrators can connect to the remote LAN (Local Area Network) A communications network that serves users within a confined geographical area. The "clients" are the user's workstations typically running Windows, although Mac and Linux clients are also used.  and use Backup Exec to remotely configure, run, schedule or monitor backup jobs and restorals.

Version 6.0 also has the ability to run the backup server as a set of Windows NT System Services, so that the backup server is automatically started when the system powers up or is rebooted. This means that network administrators do not have to login and start the backup server application.

With Backup Exec 6.0, Arcada has added its exclusive agent support for backing up Windows 95, Unix and Macintosh workstations and servers, in addition to having the ability to back up DOS, Windows and OS/2 machines. Arcada Agents ensure complete enterprise data protection for these servers and workstations.

Another key feature of Version 6.0 includes support for the RISC-based Power PC processor platform, which was developed jointly by Apple, Motorola and IBM (International Business Machines Corporation, Armonk, NY, www.ibm.com) The world's largest computer company. IBM's product lines include the S/390 mainframes (zSeries), AS/400 midrange business systems (iSeries), RS/6000 workstations and servers (pSeries), Intel-based servers (xSeries) . By porting to the PowerPC, Arcada is the only backup software provider that offers support for all four processor platforms--Alpha, Intel, MIPS (Million Instructions Per Second) The execution speed of a computer. For example, .5 MIPS is 500,000 instructions per second; 100 MIPS is a hundred million instructions per second. , and now PowerPC.

Arcada's strategy for Microsoft BackOffice

Arcada's full solution for Microsoft BackOffice will integrate backing up the various BackOffice components with network backup. The Arcada solution will consist of the following added capabilities to Backup Exec 6.0:
