Sue Lewis and Kerri Fowler are just a couple of the people who seem to have solved Angela Phinney's predicament.

"I have a tendency that, if it can't be done right, I figure I might as well do it myself," says Phinney, who supervises volunteers at ARC of Lane County's administrative office and for its respite RESPITE, contracts, civil law. Lewis and Fowler share the spotlight on that stage.

"My claim to fame, probably, is that I recruited Kerri to volunteer," says Lewis, who began her own association with the nonprofit A corporation or an association that conducts business for the benefit of the general public without shareholders and without a profit motive.

Lewis, incidentally, just happens to be the county organization's volunteer of the month for December.

"She could be our permanent volunteer of the month," Phinney says. "She is the person I always know I can call and she will come in and help me do these projects."

Lewis, whose active volunteerism with the United Way-funded agency dates back about 30 years, typically takes on projects that range from envelope-stuffing to preparing gift baskets A gift basket, or fruit basket is typically a gift that is delivered to the recipient at their home or workplace. "What I've come to realize over the years is the ARC is really our home," Lewis says. "The ARC has always been there for us, so my heart is really with this organization."

Fowler, meanwhile, signs on each year to greet patrons and bus tables at the benefit dinner, and she also crochets afghans that become coveted cov·et

"I volunteer to make blankets and stuff," Fowler says, proudly displaying the intricate workmanship of a recent creation.

"When I first wanted to learn to crochet, my grandmother said I couldn't do it," she says.

ARC of Lane County offers a variety of center-based and in-home respite programs that are aimed at "normalizing" the lives of people with developmental disabilities and their families by providing a range of social and recreational opportunities.

Fowler, for instance, has participated in numerous camping trips and other outings.

She also enjoys just being able to spend time at the ARC office at 45 W. Broadway, helping out as needed as needed prn. See prn order.  and teaching others the independent-living skills she's learned - from finding their way around downtown to negotiating bus schedules.

"I like it," Fowler says. "I like being active and stuff, and being out in the community with my friends."
