ARC - First Titanium Matrix Composite Aircraft Part Passes Critical Design Review for Flight.

GAINESVILLE, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 8, 1996--Atlantic Research Corp. (ARC) announces that the first titanium matrix composite aircraft part has successfully passed the critical design review for flight.

The Air Force F-22 System Program Office, Pratt & Whitney, Parker Bertea, and Atlantic Research Corp. recently reviewed performance test results, processing information and quality assurance data for a new titanium matrix composite piston for a turbine engine actuator A mechanism that causes a device to be turned on or off, adjusted or moved. The motor and mechanism that moves the head assembly on a disk drive or an arm of a robot is called an actuator. See access arm. .

The actuator, which is manufactured by Parker Bertea of Irvine, Calif., is the divergent nozzle actuator for the Pratt & Whitney F119 turbine engine which is being developed in West Palm Beach, Fla. The F119 engine is the power plant for the twin engine F-22 fighter.

The titanium matrix composite piston rod blank is manufactured by Atlantic Research Corp. Atlantic Research Corp. uses advanced techniques for co-winding titanium wire with silicon carbide silicon carbide, chemical compound, SiC, that forms extremely hard, dark, iridescent crystals that are insoluble in water and other common solvents. Widely used as an abrasive, it is marketed under such familiar trade names as Carborundum and Crystolon.  monofilament monofilament,

When the F-22 successfully completes the flight test program, the titanium matrix composite piston rod will be incorporated into the production bill of material.
