ARBY'S SIGNS DEVELOPMENT AGREEMENT FOR RESTAURANTS IN UNITED KINGDOM
MIAMI, Feb. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Consumers in the United Kingdom, no strangers to fast food establishments, soon will have Arby's roast beef sandwiches as an option.
Arby's, Inc., the world's largest roast beef sandwich chain, has signed an exclusive development agreement with entrepreneurs for 50 restaurants in the United Kingdom over the next five years. The announcement was made by Victor Posner, chairman of Arby's, Inc.
The agreement has been signed with a newly formed company that will do business as GSR Restaurant Group. The principals of GSR Restaurant Group are international businessman Ghassan O. Attar, serving as chairman and chief executive officer, and veteran restaurateur Rocky Aiyash, who is president and chief operating officer.
Although the site is still being negotiated, current plans are for Arby's largest restaurant ever, seating 300 people and employing about 70 people.
Attar has indicated that restaurant operations will be managed locally and that GSR Restaurant Group will be based in London.
"We believe the United Kingdom is a strong expansion opportunity for Arby's. The quality of Arby's roast beef sandwiches and other products will offer wholesome and nutritious fast food dining to health-conscious consumers. Arby's is a strong fast-food company which will allow us to expand as quickly as the market in the United Kingdom demands," said Attar.
"We conducted an extensive year-long search in the United Kingdom to find the right partner to serve as our master franchisee in the United Kingdom. GSR Restaurant Group has the background in financial management franchising, operations and food service that we require when we move into a new country," said Gaylon Smith, Arby's senior vice president of domestic and international franchising. "We have also granted GSR Restaurant Group the rights to sub-franchise Arby's to other entrepreneurs throughout the U.K. Charles Harper-Smith, Arby's director of international development, will serve as liaison to supervise our U.K. development program. We view the U.K. as an excellent base from which to grow throughout the European community."
Arby's is the world's largest roast beef sandwich chain, with over 2,500 restaurants in the United States, Canada, Asia, Mexico, Australia and the Caribbean. In 1990, the company reached a record $1.43 billion in sales, a 9 percent increase over the previous year, and opened 220 restaurants. Founded in 1964 with 20 employees, Arby's today has 75,000 employees worldwide and commitments for a total of 3,150 restaurants. Arby's is ranked as an industry leader in areas such as technology, product development, such as Arby's Light Menu, nutritional and consumer information, and community service.
