ARABS-ISRAEL - Jan. 27 - Suicide Bomber Kills Two And Wounds 120.

Wafa Idris, a 28-year-old medic from the West Bank Amari refugee camp, triggers a massive explosion in central Jerusalem's Jaffa Street, killing herself and Pinhas Tokatli, an 81-year-old Israeli, and wounding more than 120. (This is the fourth major terrorist attack on Jerusalem's centre in 11 days, and the second on the same block in 5 days).

The Jerusalem police chief Mickey Levy, 50, suffered a massive heart attack a short while after he directed the police response at the scene of the bombing. Later in the day, he was in stable condition. Minutes before he walked to the hospital, Levy told journalists: "Even if I take all the 3,500 policemen I have, I still can't close the city hermetically". Among those who were wounded in the blast were an 80-year-old Israeli woman and a 12-year-old American girl visiting Jerusalem with her parents. Soon after the bombing, the TV station in Lebanon run by Hizbollah reported that the bomber was a Palestinian woman. Israeli sources confirmed it several hours later. They were not sure if the bomber intended to blow herself up or was in the process of carrying or planting the bomb when it exploded prematurely. There were unconfirmed reports identifying the bomber as Shahinaz Amari, a student in her early 20s at Al Najjah University in Nablus affiliated with Hamas. But later they were denied and the bomber was identified as Wafa Idris.

Israeli officials blamed Arafat for giving the green light to terrorist attacks and failing to crack down on militant groups. Israeli officials said Arafat had specifically endorsed violence in his Jan. 26 speech, in which he called for "jihad and martyrdom" and said, "please God, give me the honour of being one of holy Jerusalem's holy martyrs". Jerusalem Mayor Ehud Olmert said, "as long as Arafat wants to continue this terror, it will continue" and added that the Palestinian leader "wants Jewish blood on the ground". The PA issued a statement condemning all attacks on Israeli civilians and urging the return to the region of US special envoy Anthony Zinni. But US Pres. Bush embraced the Israeli position blaming Arafat for the spiral of events and officials said there were no plans for a return trip by Zinni.
