Lit. member of Parliament Boutross Harb HARB Harbor HARB Historical and Architectural Review Board asks new Syrian president Bashar Al Assad to free all Lebanese political prisoners in Syria. He says: "We ask Pres. Bashar Al Assad to hand over to the Lebanese authorities all Lebanese who are in detention The act of keeping back, restraining, or withholding, either accidentally or by design, a person or thing. Detention occurs whenever a police officer accosts an individual and restrains his or her freedom to walk away, or approaches and questions an individual, or stops an in Syria for criminal reasons and to release those who are in detention for political reasons". (The move follows Assad's decision to release Syrian political prisoners.) Harb says: "If Assad took such a step it would confirm his reform policy, especially in strengthening Syrian-Lebanese relations and putting them on the right track". (Syria is the main power broker in Lebanon, where it has kept troops since 1976. Dozens of Lebanese, mainly Christians, are under detention without charge in Syria, for opposing the Syrian presence in Lebanon.) |
