ARA recognizes lifetime contributions of board members. (FYI News & Notes).


The Agricultural Retailers Association, Washington, D.C., honored board members Lowell Lowell National Historical Park, which also traces 19th-century industrial development (see National Parks and Monuments (table)); the American Textile History Museum is adjacent. A campus of the Univ. of Massachusetts is in Lowell. The city has several fine parks, and James Whistler's birthplace is preserved. Charles Dickens visited Lowell in 1842 and described it in American Notes.

 Downey Downey, city (1990 pop. 91,444), Los Angeles co., S Calif., a residential and industrial suburb between Los Angeles and Long Beach; inc. 1957. Its many manufactures include metal products, rubber goods, communications equipment, and dairy products. There is aerospace manufacturing nearby. and Jim Thrift during the annual conference in Memphis, Tenn. Downey was presented with the Lifetime Achievement award for his work on the ARA Ara or Arrah (both: ŭ`rə), city (1991 pop. 157,082), Bihar state, NE India, on the Son Canal. A major road and rail junction, it is the administrative center for a district that produces grain, sugarcane, and oilseed. There are limestone deposits on the outskirts.'s board of directors since 1992. Most recently, he served as chairman of the legislative committee. Lowell's career in the industry spanned more than four decades, culminating with his appointment as president of Collingwood Collingwood, town (1991 pop. 13,505), S Ont., Canada at the south end of Georgian Bay, an arm of Lake Huron. Collingwood is a shipbuilding center and has one of the largest dry docks on the Great Lakes. It is famous for its Blue Mountain pottery, made from Georgian Bay clay. It is also a winter ski resort. Grain in 1989. Thrift was recognized with the Distinguished Service award. He was instrumental in securing $1 million from his employer American Cyanamid to form the present-day ARA. He also served as a member of the Strategic Task Force and spearheaded the Grassroots Legislative Leaders Program.
