AQUATRED INVENTORS EARN COVETED IPO AWARD

WASHINGTON, April 15 /PRNewswire/ -- An association of patent owners presented its Distinguished Inventor Award today to seven co-inventors of the Goodyear Aquatred radial passenger car tire in a congressional ceremony here.
The inventors of the radically different Aquatred tire are among artificial-heart, synthetic-skin and liquid-crystal scientists, who have been recognized in the past 20 years by the Intellectual Property Owners (IPO), a Washington association of patent, trademark, copyright and trade secret owners.
The Aquatred tire is the only mass-market consumer product involved in the award's history. In less than a year after its introduction, Goodyear manufactured its millionth Aquatred, a significant accomplishment for a new premium replacement auto tire sold solely in the United States. Aquatred now is being sold in all regions of the world.
Past inventor awards have gone to creators of the Jarvik Seven Artificial Heart (1983), synthetic skin (1987), liquid crystal eye protection (1989) and programmed electrical stimulation of paralyzed muscles (1986), to name a few.
"We sincerely appreciate that this government-related organization has recognized Aquatred, its inventors and the importance of science in consumer products," said Joe Gingo, Goodyear vice president of worldwide tire technology. "Goodyear scientists and engineers are honored to be in this company of past and present winners."
Aquatred inventors include researchers and engineers from technical centers and research laboratories in Akron, Ohio, and Luxembourg in Europe.
The tire's inventors are Sam Landers, chief engineer of passenger tire programs, Akron; John Attinello, tire design engineer, Akron; William Glover, group leader, advanced tire design, Akron; Adel Halasa, R&D fellow, Akron; Paul Maxwell, advanced tire designer, Luxembourg; Fernand Fourgon, staff engineer, Luxembourg; and Jean Bergh, manager of tire compound and reinforcement technology, Luxembourg.
The IPO award is the first to specifically name the seven inventors who had a hand in Aquatred's development -- from its deep water- evacuating center groove and lateral channel design to the dual wet- traction/long treadwear SIBR polymer used in its treadface. In the past year, the tire has been recognized seven times for its engineering and design and Goodyear's marketing efforts.
On cars with anti-lock braking systems, Aquatred can stop up to 20 percent sooner than other Goodyear family car tires on rain-slick roads. The tire also is backed by a 60,000-mile limited treadlife warranty.
