Quate as this year's recipients of the Joseph F. Keithley Award.
The annual prize recognizes physicists who have made outstanding
advances in measurement science through the development of original
measurement techniques or equipment. Nominations are reviewed by a
panel of five APS members, who select a person or persons working in
the same area whose contributions have made a long-lasting impact on
both physics and instrumentation.
Both men are being recognized for their research work on scanning
probe microscopes, near-field optics, including their application to
storage and in-situ measurements to improve the yield and/or
throughput of manufacturing lines.
Educated at the University of London and Stanford University, Dr.
Wickramasinghe is currently Manager of Imaging Science and Measurement
Technology at IBM's T.J. Watson Research Center in Yorktown Heights,
New York. A fellow of the APS, Institute of Physics, IEE and Royal
Microscopical Society, Dr. Wickramasinghe was elected to membership in
the National Academy of Engineering in 1998. Prior honors and awards

Fame, 1998. He was also chosen Centennial Lecturer for the APS in
1999.
Dr. Quate received his BS from the University of Utah and his
Ph.D. from Stanford University, where he is currently the Leland T.
Edwards Professor (Research) of Electrical Engineering and Professor
(Research) of Applied Physics by Courtesy. A Guggenheim Fellow and a
Fulbright Scholar, Dr. Quate is a member of the National Academy of
Engineering, the National Academy of Sciences, and the Royal Society
of London. He received the Rank Prize for Optoelectronics in 1982; the
IEEE Medal of Honor in 1988; and the President's National Medal of
Science in 1992.
The award is endowed by Keithley Instruments, Inc. (NYSE:KEI) and
