APPROVAL SOUGHT FOR SCENIC ROUTE.

Byline: Michael Coit Daily News Staff Writer

Ventura County's first Coastal Scenic Highway could be designated by colorful signs featuring a sailboat logo in time for the summer tourism season, leaders of the effort said Monday.

After four months of meetings, the scenic route committee is ready to sell the idea to the county Board of Supervisors The examples and perspective in this article or section may represent an unduly geographically limited view of the subject.

Approval is expected, given the nominal cost - less than $10,000 for two dozen signs - and the potential return in both regional boosterism boost·er·ism

``It's kind of exciting to get everybody working on the thing,'' said Supervisor Frank Schillo, one of the main organizers of the scenic highway effort. ``It could pay big dividends.''

By erecting colorful signs with the common sailboat logo and directional arrows to destinations, route backers hope to lure tourists away from the Ventura Freeway The Ventura Freeway is a freeway in southern California running from Ventura to Pasadena. The route would extend from Main Street and the Ventura Freeway in Ventura to Hueneme Road and the Pacific Coast Highway Pacific Coast Highway may refer to:

Sights range from the San Buenaventura Mission founded in 1782 in what is now downtown Ventura to the display of modern jets and missiles outside the gates of the Point Mugu Naval Air Warfare Center The Naval Air Warfare Center was a former U.S. Navy military installation located in Warminster, Pennsylvania and Ivyland, Pennsylvania.

. In between are three state beaches, two bustling boating harbors and the largest commercial port between Oakland and Los Angeles. There also are swaths of farmland where row crops, citrus and seemingly endless rows of strawberries are grown.

``Any kind of designation like that has an impact,'' said Tim O'Neil, president of the Downtown Ventura Association, which represents 450 businesses in that city. ``It helps give people an idea of a destination, and if we have that kind of a route, there are people who would pick up on that.''

Further, the proposed route offers a variety of sights and landmarks that reflect the county's enduring rural and coastal charm, O'Neil said.

``A lot of our county is nothing special because it's not developed or overdeveloped. The lack of development could be a plus,'' he said.

The route does not qualify for official Scenic Highway status conferred by the state Department of Transportation. The program has such strict restrictions on residential and commercial development that the only county highway marked with the state's distinctive poppy signs is a 23-mile section of Highway 33 through the Los Padres National Forest Los Padres National Forest is a forest located in southern and central California, which includes most of the mountainous land along the California coast from Ventura to Monterey, extending inland. So the committee agreed on a colorful sign that includes the route's name and the same sailboat logo now featured on tourism signs in the city of Ventura. Each city also can include arrows directing motorists to destinations, Schillo said.

The signs would be placed mostly at points to keep motorists on the route. Beginning on Main Street, the route would follow to California Street and Harbor Boulevard in Ventura, continue on Harbor and Channel Islands boulevards in Oxnard, and along Ventura and Hueneme roads in Port Hueneme to the Pacific Coast Highway.
