Keppel Union School District trustees will consider a proposal to create a charter school in a building adjoining First Missionary Baptist Church. The school board has scheduled a May 11 public hearing to take comments regarding the Rev. Henry Hearns Charter School of Academic Excellence. ``We're very optimistic op·ti·mist n. 1. Patricia Rhodes, a mortgage company owner. ``Our program is designed to address educational needs and to provide equity in education of an underserved segment of urban youth.'' In July, the Keppel board considered the proposal but asked for additional information. The proposed charter is available for inspection by the public at Keppel schools and the district office at 34004 128th St. E. The hearing is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. May 11 at Antelope School, 37237 100th St. E. Named for First Missionary Baptist Church's pastor, who is also Lancaster's vice mayor, the school would be located in a 16,400-square-foot, two-story building next to the church. The school building contains 20 classrooms, a library, administrative offices and a 4,500-square-foot multipurpose mul·ti·pur·pose adj. Designed or used for several purposes: a multipurpose room; multipurpose software. multipurpose Adjective room. As a charter school, it would receive funding from the state but have freedom to make its own rules and regulations. The school will include kindergarten kindergarten [Ger.,=garden of children], system of preschool education. Friedrich Froebel designed (1837) the kindergarten to provide an educational situation less formal than that of the elementary school but one in which children's creative play instincts would be through eighth grade, but probably would start out with only the lower grades. ``The centerpiece of our program is based upon mastery learning Mastery Learning is an instructional method that presumes all children can learn if they are provided with the appropriate learning conditions. Specifically, mastery learning is a method whereby students are not advanced to a subsequent learning objective until they demonstrate , generated learning and generated teaching,'' Rhodes said. ``Our focus is to develop the whole person in a multicultural mul·ti·cul·tur·al adj. 1. Of, relating to, or including several cultures. 2. Of or relating to a social or educational theory that encourages interest in many cultures within a society rather than in only a mainstream culture. environment.''
