APPLEBEE'S REPORTS RESTAURANT SALES DATA FOR 1993

 OVERLAND PARK, Kan., Jan. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Applebee's International, Inc., (NASDAQ-NMS: APPB) today reported that total system sales for the fiscal year ended December 26, 1993, were $608.5 million, an increase of 51 percent from total system sales of $404.2 million in fiscal 1992. System sales include franchisee sales as reported to Applebee's International, as well as sales of company-owned and operated restaurants.
 System sales for the fourth quarter ended December 26, 1993, were $172.2 million, a 52 percent increase from system sales of $113.2 million for the comparable period in 1992.
 System-wide comparable sales increased 8.5 percent in fiscal 1993. Comparable sales of company-owned and operated restaurants increased 11.1 percent and comparable franchisee sales were up 8.0 percent for the year.
 Fourth quarter 1993 system-wide comparable sales increased 6.1 percent, compared with the fourth quarter of 1992. Comparable sales of company-owned and operated restaurants increased 7.8 percent and comparable franchisee sales were up 5.7 percent in the 1993 fourth quarter.
 Applebee's expects to report fiscal 1993 operating results at the end of February.
 At year-end 1993, there were 361 Applebee's restaurants open in 40 states, with an additional 18 sites under construction and 59 franchisee sites approved. This compares with 250 restaurants open in 32 states at the end of 1992.
