The release of Mac OS X, the next generation operating system operating system (OS)

Software that controls the operation of a computer, directs the input and output of data, keeps track of files, and controls the processing of computer programs.
 from Apple Computer, will be extended from a scheduled date late this summer to January 2001. A beta version A pre-shipping release of hardware or software that has gone through alpha test. A beta version of software is supposed to be very close to the final product, but, in practice, it is more a way of getting users to test the software in the first place under real conditions.  of OS X will be available in the summer, but a fullscale version not until January 2001.
