At a news conference Friday evening, it was announced that Apple will buy Next Software Inc. - the company Jobs founded after leaving Apple - for $400 million.

``The acquisition of Next is the start of a new chapter in Apple's history and represents a milestone in our transformation as a corporation,'' said Gilbert F. Amelio, Apple's chairman and chief executive. Amelio called Jobs the company's ``most talented visionary.''
