APPLE ANNOUNCES SUPPORT FOR GENERAL MAGIC TECHNOLOGIES

NEW YORK, Feb. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Following the unveiling by General Magic of their Telescript and Magic Cap technologies, Apple (NASDAQ-NMS: AAPL) has announced its intention to include Telescript with its Macintosh PowerBook family as well as with products from its Personal Interactive Electronics (PIE) division. These include products in the forthcoming Newton family and services from the Apple Online Services Group.
"Apple is uniquely positioned to integrate hardware, software and services and to drive technology standards -- Telescript will allow us to enhance our current offerings in these areas, as well as create new classes of products and services," according to Gaston Bastiaens, vice president and general manager of Apple's Personal Interactive Electronics (PIE) division.
"Apple was involved in the genesis of General Magic," said Apple Chairman and Chief Executive Officer John Sculley. "We're very excited about the company's technology and the impact of the alliance announced today."
Telescript is General Magic's programming language and software for communications. It embeds intelligence in electronic mail systems and computer applications, enabling them to co-operate with one another and with the networks that interconnect them.
General Magic grew out of a project at Apple Computer designed to look beyond personal computing. Two of its three founders -- Andy Hertzfeld and Bill Atkinson -- were principal members of the original Macintosh development team. Third co-founder and General Magic president, Marc Porat, came from Apple's Advanced Technology Group.
