APPLE ANNOUNCES NEW MACTCP TOKEN RING EXTENSION AT INTEROP SPRING '92

APPLE ANNOUNCES NEW MACTCP TOKEN RING EXTENSION AT INTEROP SPRING '92
WASHINGTON, May 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Apple Computer Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) announced a Token Ring Extension for its MacTCP software, which is a complete Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) implementation that enables third-party developers to provide a rich set of TCP/IP applications for the Apple Macintosh line of computers. By using the MacTCP Token Ring Extension, MacTCP, and MacTCP-based applications, Macintosh computers will be able to seamlessly interoperate with other computers via the TCP/IP protocol on Token Ring (IEEE 802.5) networks. This enhancement to the Apple MacTCP product will address an increasing customer requirement for Macintosh to IBM host computer connectivity via TCP/IP on Token Ring networks.
TCP/IP is a set of networking standards widely used by universities, government institutions and corporate business institutions to interconnect heterogeneous systems and is considered one of today's leading standards-based networking environments. With this new extension, Apple is adding to its already robust and integrating foundation for TCP/IP applications on the Macintosh computer. By using MacTCP and MacTCP-based applications, Macintosh computers will be able to communicate via TCP/IP over LocalTalk, Ethernet, and Token Ring cabling systems, have simultaneous access to TCP/IP and AppleTalk services, and have multiple, concurrent TCP/IP sessions. System Requirements
To use MacTCP and the MacTCP Token Ring Extension on Token Ring- compatible systems requires a Macintosh computer that supports an appropriate Token Ring interface device, such as the Apple Token Ring 4/16 NB Card, system software version 6.0.5 or later and at least 1MB of memory, or system software version 7.0 or later and at least 2MB of memory. Availability
The MacTCP Token Ring Extension will be available in the late June 1992 time frame and will be bundled into Apple's MacTCP 1.1 product. MacTCP is available in single user license MacTCP Developer's Kits from APDA, Apple's source for developer tools. APDA can be reached at 800-282-2732 (United States), 800-637-0029 (Canada), and 408-562-3910 (International). MacTCP Commercial Distribution and Internal Use Licenses are available from Apple's Enterprise Systems Division Licensing Department at 408-974-2320. The MacTCP Token Ring Extension software will be available to current MacTCP 1.1 licensed users on AppleLink, Apple's electronic bulletin board.
