* Create a volunteer recognition program that energizes and excites. Highlight a "volunteer of the month" in your organization's magazine or newsletter or host a dinner after busy projects or programs.

* Plan to recognize volunteers when they least expect it. While the holidays may seem a perfect time to show your appreciation, a recognition ceremony might easily get lost in the shuffle of family and social obligations.

Gear up for this event by sending a press release to volunteers' local newspapers praising their commitment. Or send an e-greeting to remind them there is a special day to recognize their special service.

* Keep it personal. Nothing beats phone calls or handwritten hand·write
