His 27 appearances heading into Thursday night's game at Toronto were the most in either league, and he has been in more games than four of the Twins' position players.

``When spring training broke, I knew I was the only lefty, but I didn't know how they were going to use me,'' Guardado said before working 1-2/3 scoreless innings in Wednesday's 6-5 loss to the Texas Rangers Texas Rangers, mounted fighting force organized (1835) during the Texas Revolution. He was just 22 and had only 50 minor-league appearances (49 as a starter) in two seasons when the Twins rushed him to the majors midway through the 1993 season.

He was 3-8 with a 6.18 ERA in 16 starts in '93, and 0-2 with an 8.47 ERA in four starts the following year before being sent down to Triple-A AAA AAA: see American Automobile Association.

He was back up when the strike-delayed '95 season began, but he lost his first five starts while running up a 9.28 ERA. He was bumped again, this time to the bullpen, and he has improved steadily ever since.

He was 4-4 with a 3.86 ERA in 46 relief appearances last season, and is 1-2, 3.86 this year. Opponents are hitting just .225 against him.

``When I first came up I was a starter and I thought I had the stuff,'' Guardado said. ``But I got behind on the hitters, and maybe I was a little intimidated in·tim·i·date

Guardado is just one of many young pitchers the Twins are trying to develop. The results have been disappointing, as evidenced by the 5.41 team ERA, second-worst in the AL. But after a rough start this season, Guardado has been the Twins' most reliable reliever.

Pitching coach Dick Such believes Guardado has benefited from being the closest thing the staff has to an everyday player.

``We didn't expect him to pitch this much, but we used him as the game dictated,'' Such said. ``We needed a lefty in the game, and he was the only one there.

``The more you can get on the mound, the more you can experience. So the more you use him, the better he should become.''

Not a chance. Guardado knows how valuable he can be as a consistent left-handed reliever.

``I don't even think about it,'' he said. ``I think I'm better suited (in the bullpen). I think I'll be in the major leagues a long time if I keep on doing what I'm doing.''
